Streptomycin hormonal

Certain antibiotics such as the tetracyclines, streptomycin, neomycin and kanamycin can cripple the tubules if taken in excessive amounts. Toxic damage to the kidneys can affect not only their filtration functions, but can alter the organs control over blood levels of certain critical molecules. A complex biochemical-hormonal system controlling blood pressure and volume, for example, is regulated by the kidneys, so that chronic kidney damage can inflict damage on the... [Pg.121]

The pituitaries of male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing about 100 g are quickly removed after decapitation. The posterior lobe is discarded and the anterior lobe is divided into two halves by a midsagittal cut. Five bisected hemipituitaries are incubated in plastic vials containing 4 ml TCM 199 with 0.1 % BSA, 15 pg/ml penicillin and 25 fig/ml streptomycin. The vials are gassed with 95 % O2 and 5 % C02. After 30 min of control incubation, the medium is changed and various doses of standard and test substances are added for an incubation of 90 min. GH content in the medium and in the pituitary tissue after incubation is determined by a specific radioimmunoassay (Schalch and Reichlin 1966). Other of hormones may be tested in the same procedure, for example prolactin. [Pg.340]

Merck plunged into the most cutting-edge research of the time— vitamins, sulfas (a precursor of antibiotics), antibiotics, and steroids and other hormones. In its labs, the TB cure streptomycin was discovered and the powerful hormone cortisone was first synthesized. During World War II, the government asked Merck, Pfizer, Squibb, and Lederle Labs to workjointly to speed up production of penicillin. [Pg.25]

C, D. Conjugated proteins. Prosthetic group. Hormones epinephrine, thyroxin, insulin, cortisone, ACTH. Chemotherapy. Arsphenamine, sulfanilamide and other sulfa drugs, penicillin, streptomycin, chloramphenicol, aiireomycin. Bacteriostatic action of sulfa drugs through competition with a bacterial growth substance, para-aminobenzoic acid. [Pg.619]

The hormone activity of our synthetic enantiomers of A-factor was studied by Hara and Beppu by measuring the streptomycin production upon addition of the enantiomers 127 and 127 to 5. griseus FT-1 strain, which does not biosynthesize A-factor. The bioactivity of the naturally occurring (3/ )-(—)-A-factor (127) was 2.6 times higher than that of the unnatural (35)-(+)-A-factor (127 ).4 Later, Miyake of Beppu s group synthesized tritium-labelled A-factor, and identified the A-factor binding protein of 5. griseus.5... [Pg.191]

Walker et al. demonstrated that streptomycin (a usual antibiotic additive to cell culture media) has synergistic effects on CSA toxicity to LLC-PKj cells [185]. Since that publication most investigators have conducted CSA experiments without antibiotics. This represents a good example that the utmost of care must be taken to exclude the possibility of interfering substances such as growth hormones, serum supplements and antibiotics, when conducting toxicity studies in vitro. [Pg.131]

OTHER COMMENTS used as an industrial solvent used as a raw material in the manufacture of formaldehyde used as an ingredient of gasoline and diesel oil antifreezes also used as an octane booster in gasoline used as a solvent in the manufacture of cholesterol, streptomycin, vitamins, hormones, and other pharmaceuticals. [Pg.733]

Aminosalicyclic acid, bacitracin, blood plasma, blood serum, methicillin salts, culture media, dextran, enzymes, gamma-globulin, hormones, streptomycin, iron dextran, lysine, casein hydrolysate, penicillin, serum hydrolysate, penicillin, serum hydrolysate, tetracycline vitamins, oleandomycin, chloramphenicol succinate salts... [Pg.694]

For the cultivation of airway epithelial cells, the cells are usually plated onto tissue culture plates coated with collagen or extracellular matrix components. Hormonally defined Ham s F12 medium contained 1 % penicillin-streptomycin, 5 ig/ml insulin, 5 ig/ml transferrin, 25 ng/ml epidermal growth factor, 15 ig/ml epithehal growth factor supplement, 2 X 10" M triiodothyronin, and 10" M hydrocortisone. [Pg.65]

The third criterion is that suppression or inhibition of any phenomena in the cause-effect sequence of the model should produce suppression or inhibition of all the following phenomena of this sequence. In the case of ecdysone. inhibitors of nucleic acids and protein synthesis, such as actinomycin, mitomycin. F-deoxycytidine. puromycin, streptomycin, erythromycin, etc., inhibit in parallel the enhancement of DOPA decarbox ase activity, sclerotization and pupation. These results support the model, but they do not prove it Indeed, they suggest that intact nucleic acid and protein synthesis are required for the expression of the hormonal effect but they do not imply that the hormone acts through stimulation of the synthesis of some proteins and/or nucleic adds. Furthermore, inhibitors of nucleic acids and protein synthesis may have multiple sites of action, so that inhibition of a hormonal effect may be non-specific. [Pg.527]
