This represents a good example that the utmost of care must be taken to exclude the possibility of interfering substances such as growth hormones, serum supplements and antibiotics, when conducting toxicity studies in vitro. 

For example, female patients are instmcted to drink buttermilk and eat yogurt when taking a broad-spectmm antibiotic. This counters a possible vaginal yeast infection, which is a common adverse effect of broad-spectrum antibiotics. Additionally, a female patient should be instmcted to use other forms of birth control when taking this medication because antibiotics lower the effectiveness of birth control piUs.
