Chapter 2 treated multiple and complex reactions in an ideal batch reactor. The reactor was ideal in the sense that mixing was assumed to be instantaneous and complete throughout the vessel. Real batch reactors will approximate ideal behavior when the characteristic time for mixing is short compared with the reaction half-life. Industrial batch reactors have inlet and outlet ports and an agitation system. The same hardware can be converted to continuous operation. To do this, just feed and discharge continuously. If the reactor is well mixed in the batch mode, it is likely to remain so in the continuous mode, as least for the same reaction. The assumption of instantaneous and perfect mixing remains a reasonable approximation, but the batch reactor has become a continuous-flow stirred tank. [Pg.117]

Continuous Stirred Tanks Without Biomass Recycle. The chemostat without biomass recycle is a classic CSTR. The reactor is started in the batch mode. [Pg.454]

Crameri et al. (1997) have reported an asymmetric hydrogenation constituting an important step in the production of a new calcium antagonist, Mibefradil (POSICOR) (of Hoffmann-LaRoche). Pilot-scale synthesis of (S)-2-(4-flurophenyl)-3-methylbutanoic acid by the asymmetric hydrogenation of 2-(4-fluorophenyl)-3-methyl but-2-enoic acid with a [Ru (/ )-MeOBIPHEP)(OAc)2]-catalyst has been described. The hydrogenation was performed in a continuous mode in a cascade stirred-tank reactor system at a pressure of 270 bar. Factors re.sponsible for the occurrence of scale-up effects can be either material factors or size/shape factors. In addition, differences in the mode of operation (batch or semibatch reactor in the laboratory and continuous reactor on the full scale), or the type of equipment (e.g. stirred-tank reactor in the laboratory and packed- or plate- column reactor in commercial unit) can be causes of unexpected scale-up effects. Influence of the mode of operation on process performance. The mode of operation of stirred-tank reactors can also significantly affect reactor performance. Chemical reactors intended for use in different processes differ in size, geometry and design. Nevertheless, a number of common features allows to classify them in a systematic way [3], [4], [9]. Aspects such as, flow pattern of the reaction mixture, conditions of heat transfer in the reactor, mode of operation, variation in the process variables with time and constructional features, can be considered. The chemical reactor is the unif in which chemical reactions occur. Reactors can be operated in batch (no mass flow into or out of the reactor) or flow modes. Flow reactors operate between hmits of completely unmixed contents (the plug-flow tubular reactor or PFTR) and completely mixed contents (the continuous stirred tank reactor or CSTR). Biochemical reactors can be operated either batchwise or continuously, as noted in Section 1.5. Figure 7.1 shows, in schematic form, four modes of operation with two types of reactors for chemical and/or biochemical reactions in Uquid phases, with or without suspended solid particles, such as catalyst particles or microbial cells. An attractive property of monolithic reactors is their flexibility of application in multiphase reactions. These can be classified according to operation in (semi)batch or continuous mode and as plug-flow or stirred-tank reactor or, according to the contacting mode, as co-, counter-, and crosscurrent. The semibatch reactor is a cross between an ordinary batch reactor and a continuous-stirred tank reactor. The reactor has continuous input of reactant through the course of the batch run with no output stream. Another possibility for semibatch operation is continuous withdrawal of product with no addition of reactant. Due to the crossover between the other ideal reactor types, the semibatch uses all of the terms in the general energy and material balances. This results in more complex mathematical expressions. The slurry tank, when well mixed, can be considered a continuous-stirred tank reactor for both the gas phase and the liquid phase. When the solid is retained in the reaction vessel, it behaves in a batch mode however, catalyst can be removed and regenerated easily in a slurry tank, so activity can be maintained. [Pg.480]

In this operation mode, it is possible to mitigate the major limitation of continuous cultures, that is, the low productivity due to the loss of cells in the bioreactor outlet. Agitated Stirred Tanks Stirred tanks are common gas-liquid reactors. Reaction requirements dictate whether the gas and liquid are in a batch or continuous mode. For a liquid-phase reaction with a long time constant, a batch mode may be used. The reactor is filled with liquid, and gas is continuously fed into the reactor to maintain pressure. If by-product gases form, these gases may need to be purged continuously, if gas solubility is limiting, a higher-purity gas may be continuously fed (and, if required, recycled).
