Continuous discharge

By use of a piezoelectric device, as in a gas lighter, a small spark containing electrons and ions can be produced. If the spark is introduced into the gas in a discharge tube, it will provide the extra initial electrons and ions needed to start a continuous discharge. A plasma torch is frequently lit (started) in this fashion. [Pg.40]

Iodine Pentafluoride. Iodine pentafluoride is produced by the reaction of iodine and fluorine. Because iodine has a high melting poiat, the reaction is either performed ia a solvent or the reaction is maintained at a temperature where the iodine is Hquid. In a continuous process usiug a solvent (104), ca 1% I2 is dissolved iu IF and passed to a reactor where it is contacted with F2 gas. The IF is continuously discharged from the reactor where a small portion is taken off as product and the larger portion of the stream is recycled. [Pg.186]

A vacuum filter is a cloth-covered dmm which operates under an appHed vacuum. As the dmm passes through the sludge vat, soHds are deposited on the filter. As the dmm passes through the air, drying of the cake occurs. The cake is continuously discharged to a conveyor belt. [Pg.194]

Modem manufacturing processes quench the roast by continuous discharge into the leach water held in tanks equipped with agitators. At this point the pH of the leach solution is adjusted to between 8 and 9 to precipitate aluminum and siHcon. The modem leaching operations are very rapid because no or htde lime is used. After separation of the ore residue and precipitated impurities using rotary vacuum filters, the cmde Hquid sodium chromate may need to be treated to remove vanadium, if present, in a separate operation. The ore residue and precipitants are either recycled or treated to reduce hexavalent chromium to Cr(III) before disposal. [Pg.138]

Alkaline batteries were introduced in the early 1960s they last two to five times longer than Zn-carbon cells on continuous discharge and command two or three times the price in the USA (far more in Europe and the East). Alkaline cells became a necessary invention and they succeeded as a result of the requirements of the electronic devices. The essential improvement was the change from ammonium chloride and/or zinc chloride electrolyte to alkaline (KOH) electrolyte, the steel can construction, the outside cathode, and the zinc powder (large surface) anode. A main low-cost feature is that they use pressed cathodes and do not need to follow "jellyroll"... [Pg.65]

Several types of continuous discharges are easily available in the laboratory. These are radio frequency, Townsend, coronas, glows (normal and abnormal), and arcs. Each system possesses special characteristics which in effect govern the motion of charged particles between the electrodes, and apart from a few special cases the systems are too complex to lend themselves to simple analytical description for studying ion-molecule reactions. Here, two of the latter systems—namely, coronas and glows—will be treated in detail in order to demonstrate their feasibility for studying both exothermic and endothermic reactions. [Pg.323]

When spills and releases of hazardous gases or liquids occur, the concentration of the hazardous material in the vicinity of the release is often the greatest concern, since potential health effects on those nearby will be determined by the concentration of the substance at the time of the acute exposure. There are many models of routine continuous discharges (e.g., discharges arising from leaky valves in chemical plants), but these carmot be applied to single episodic events. Research on the ambient behavior of short-term environmental releases and the development of models for concentration profiles in episodic releases are cmcial if we are to plan appropriate safety and abatement measures. [Pg.139]

Wastewater characteristics must be known in order to select a suitable treatment system. For this purpose, the wastewater samples taken from the sources were analyzed to determine various parameters. Also, the quantities of chemicals (NaOH) required for neutralization and settling characteristics were determined. These were made separately for continuous and batch discharges. Since the system is to be designed according to the continuous discharge of wastewaters from the batch system to the treatment plant, mixed wastewater was prepared in quantities proportional to the flow rates. The quantity of NaOH required for lOOOmL of mixed wastewater is shown in Table 28.2.13... [Pg.1197]
