Where a non-permanent bond will suffice, any of the paper glues will work with fabrics manufactured from the natural fibres like cotton, silk, wool, etc. For more permanent results one of the specially developed fabric adhesives or the more water resistant types must be chosen. In those cases in which a fabric-to-fabric join is made a good degree of flexibility in the set adhesive is usually desirable, but when sticking fabric to wood, metal or other rigid substrates this is not so important, though the adhesive chosen must have an affinity for the substrate as well as for the fabric. [Pg.115]

As binders for fiherfill and nonwovens, the emulsions are applied to a loose web or mat, then heated to form a film that sticks the loose fibers together. Quaternary ammonium compounds are cationic surfactants that bind well to anionic surfaces like the protein in hair. The ammonium end sticks to the hair, leaving the long fatty end of the molecule to act as a lubricant. They are slightly conductive, so they reduce the buildup of static electricity. Quats, as they are sometimes called, include compounds like stearalkonium chloride, disteardimonium chloride, quaternium-5, or quaternium-18, polyquaternium-10 and they are all similar in form and function to cetrimonium chloride. These compounds are also widely used as fabric softeners, for all of the same reasons they make good hair conditioners. They are also used to thicken the shampoo. [Pg.204]

A safety shower is required whenever there is even the slightest possibility that clothing could catch fire or where hazardous chemicals could be spilled on skin or clothing. The use of safety blankets, though still available, is no longer recommended by some safety experts. The synthetic fabrics used in today s clothing, they claim, can melt from the heat and stick to the skin, thereby creating a secondary problem. PTFE, known under the trade names Teflon and Fluon, is resistant to all chemicals, except molten alkalies and fluorine, and can be used at temperatures up to 250°C. PTFE is used extensively for gaskets and gland packings. As a coating, it is used to confer non-stick properties to surfaces, such as filter plates. Plunkett and his assistant decided to cut open the containers. When they did, they found a white, waxy powder inside. Plunkett tested the powder. He found that it was chemically inert and heat resistant. He also found out that it had a very low surface friction. Because of this low surface friction, most things would not stick to the powder. The TFE gas in the container had polymerized to produce this new substance. The new substance s chemical name is polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). It was later named Teflon. In recent years, the use of cotton in garments has witnessed a revival. The higher comfort level of cotton fabric as compared to man-made fibers tilts the balance of customer favor towards cotton as the basic fiber in clothes. After many wash cycles, however, both the appearance and the soft feel of the cotton fabric are lost the surface appears bland and the fabric touch has turned rough. This roughness stems at least in part from loose ends of cotton fibers which have separated from the bulk fabric and stick out on the surface.
