Overbraided hose liners are made from fine powder resins by paste extmsion, and thread-sealant tapes are produced from fine powder by calendering. Fabricated gaskets are made from granular resins and pipe liners are produced from fine powder resins. Fibers and filament forms are also available. [Pg.355]

Calendering and Extrusion. Priction compounds are used to build up composite stmctures of fabric and mbber. The surface of the calendered fabric must have good green tack, and for that reason compounds to be calendered are best made from a slow crysta11i2ing pepti2able polymer such as Du Pont GRT or Baypren 610. The relative temperatures of the fabric and various roUs must be carefully controUed so that the polymer does not stick to the roUs yet penetrates the fabric (137). [Pg.544]

Further, no really high bond adhesive was found for it, so that the surface gradually disbonded from the adhesive over a period of time. Fine Powder Resins. Fine powder PTFE resins are extremely sensitive to shear. They must be handled gendy to avoid shear, which prevents processing. In the calendering method, a PVC compound which contains plasticizers (qv) (60—120 phr), pigments (qv) (0—10 phr), fillers (qv) (20—60 phr), stabilizers (10—30 phr), and other additives, is kneaded with calender roUs at 150—200°C, followed by extmsion between clearance-adjusted roUs for bonding onto the substrate. This method is employed for products with thick PVC layers, ie, of 0.05—0.75 mm thickness. The main plasticizer used is di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DOP). For filler to reduce cost, calcium carbonate is mainly used. A woven or knit fabric made of cotton, rayon, nylon, polyester, and their blend fiber is used as substrate. Smooth surfaces are normally estabflshed by calendering, a process which subjects the fabric at the nip point(s) of two or more roUs to the influence of controlled time, temperature, and pressure. When calendering is used as a thermal-bonding process, the roUs are of the same dimension and composition and are independently driven. However, when calendering is used as a fabric finishing operation, the roUs are frequently of different dimensions and composition and are not always independently driven. [Pg.156]

Specific terms have been designated according to the function and composition of various roUs. Steel roUs that impose pressure, transmit heat, and emboss a pattern onto the fabric are known as pattern roUs. Flexible surface roUs that transport the fabric and permit pressure transmission to the fabric are termed bowl roUs or bowls. Bowl roUs are usually larger in diameter than pattern roUs. The material used to make these types of roUs is chosen according to the depth of surface smoothness to be placed on the fabric being calendered, and must be compatible with the pattern roU. Cellulose pulp, cotton, wool, cotton—wool mixtures, com husk, and various polymer materials are used as fillers for the roU surface compound. [Pg.156]

Tape may be made by a similar process. In this case the lubricant selected is a non-volatile oil. The preform is placed in the extruder and a rod extruded. The rod is then passed between a pair of calender rolls at about 60-80°C. The unsintered tape is often used for lapping wire and for making lapped tube. Sintering is carried out after fabrication. The current most important application of unsintered tape is in pipe-thread sealing. [Pg.371]
