Similar to other polyesters, PLA displays crystal polymorphism and four different crystal modifications have been identified so far, named a-, P-, y-, and e-forms. The a-form of PLA grows upon melt- or cold-crystallization, as well as from solution [18-25]. Hot-drawn, melt-spun, or solution-spun PLA fibers of a high-draw ratio show the P-form [21-23]. The y-form is obtained via epitaxial crystallization on hexamethylbenzene substrate [24] and the s-modification is a crystalline complex formed below room temperature in the presence of specific organic solvents such as tetrahydrofuran and Af,Af-dimethylformamide [25]. Besides these four main crystal polymorphs, two disordered modifications of the a-form, named a and a , were recently proposed for PLA. The a -crystals grow via melt- or cold-crystallization below 110 °C [21, 26-29], whereas the a"-form develops upon crystallization under special processing conditions, below the glass transition temperature and in the presence of carbon dioxide [30]. [Pg.111]

The copolymers have been used in the manufacture of extruded pipe, moulded fittings and for other items of chemical plant. They are, however, rarely used in Europe for this purpose because of cost and the low maximum service temperature. Processing conditions are adjusted to give a high amount of crystallinity, for example by the use of moulds at about 90°C. Heated parts of injection cylinders and extruder barrels which come into contact with the molten polymer should be made of special materials which do not cause decomposition of the polymer. Iron, steel and copper must be avoided. The danger of thermal decomposition may be reduced by streamlining the interior of the cylinder or barrel to avoid dead-spots and by careful temperature control. The filter structure consists of a stack of plates attached to a hollow shaft which are mounted inside a pressure vessel with each plate covered with a suitable filter medium. The slurry is fed under pressure into the vessel and the cake, which is retained by the filter medium, forms on the top of each plate whilst the filtrate passes through the hollow shaft further to the process. Filter sizes may vary but generally the maximum is 60 m area and designed for a 6 bar operating pressure. Each circular plate in the stack is constructed with radial ribs that are welded to the bottom and support a horizontal coarse mesh screen which is covered with a finer woven metal screen or filter cloth to retain the cake. The bottom of the plate slopes towards the hollow central shaft which lets the filtrate flow freely through circumferential holes and further down the shaft to the filtrate outlet. The clearance between the plates is maintained by special spacers with "o" rings to positively seal between the slurry that surrounds the plates and the shaft that collects the filtrate. The height of the spacers determine the clearance for cake build-up and may be replaced to meet various process conditions. [Pg.204]

The precious metals are many times the cost of the base metals and, therefore, are limited to specialized applications or to those in which process conditions are highly demanding (e.g., where conditions are too corrosive for base metals and temperatures too high for plastics where base metal contamination must be avoided, as in the food and pharmaceutical industries or where plastics cannot be used because of heat transfer requirements and for special applications such as bursting discs in pressure vessels). Curare was first examined by Roulin and Boussingalt, who isolated a syrupy body, which they named curarine much later a similar substance was obtained by Buchner, - and in 1865 Preyer announced that he had obtained curarine and its salts in a well-crystallised condition, and by analysis of the platinichloride, ascertained its composition to be C10H35N. Sachs - was only able to obtain an amorphous alkaloid, to which he assigned the formula CigHjjN. The work of Boehm explained to some extent these discrepant results he examined all three varieties and showed that they differed in composition, and that the isolation of the various curarines as single substances required special processes. [Pg.373]

To limit the potential for deficiencies to escape detection before the product is released, special processes should be documented in the form of procedures and specifications that will ensure the suitability of all equipment, personnel, and facilities, and prevent varying conditions, activities, or operations. Qualification in the context of special processes means that you need to conduct a thorough assessment of the processes to determine their capability to maintain or detect the conditions needed to produce conforming product consistently. The limits of capability need to be determined and the processes only applied within these limits. In qualifying the processes you need to qualify the personnel using them by training and examination as well as the materials, equipment, and facilities employed. It is the combination of personnel, materials, equipment, and facilities which ensure qualified processes. [Pg.363]
