Screens and meshes

A wide variety of screens and meshes are available, ranging from fine photoetched or electroformed perforated screens to the heavy duty wedge wire screens used in centrifuge and high pressure screw press construction. Simple sieves and coarse screens were used as early as the sixteenth century for processing metal ores. Modern woven wire screens are precision made cloths with aperture sizes as small as 20 pm (smaller aperture sizes are supplied by some manufacturers) for industrial separations in filtration, clarification and extraction. Plastic meshes and plastic coated metal meshes are finding an increasing number of applications in separation processes.

As also applicable to screens and meshes, thin films must be bonded to the aperture opening 360° around the periphery. Otherwise, the film is compromised and S E suffers significantly. 

Commercial appHcations include substrates, fluidic devices, fine mesh screens, and magnetic head pads. 

In the United States most commercial hydrates easily conform to the minimum basic requirement of no more than 0.5% retained on 590 ]Am (30 mesh) screen and no more than 15% retained on a 74 ]Am (200 mesh) screen. Typical analyses of hydrates are contained in Table 5. 

Etibank is the sole producer of boron minerals and derivatives in Turkey, which is second in production only to the United States. The open-pit Kirka mine in the Eskisehir Province is the only source of Turkish sodium borate ore. A tincal concentrate is produced from ore that has been blasted and carried in tmcks to the concentration plant. The ore is screened and cmshed to reduce it to —100 mm and then hammer milled to —25 mm. The stockpiled material is further milled and screened to 6 mm. A fraction of +1 mm (+18 mesh, U.S. Standard) is washed and classified to remove fine clay. Clay is removed from the —1 mm faction bypassing it through cyclones and then through a classifier. This material is centrifuged and combined with the washed + 1 mm faction to produce a final product which is a —6 mm concentrate having 6—8 wt % moisture and 32% 2 3 1987 production was... 

The Iron filings used were free of grease and ore. Ninety-five per cent of the filings passed an 8o-mesh screen and 6o per cent passed a loo-mesh screen. Grade D iron supplied by the Master Builders Company, Cleveland, Ohio, is ready for use and very satisfactory. 

Lube oil system from pump discharge to the distribution system should be flushed with lube oil at 160 F-180°F. Oil should flow across a 200 mesh screen and flushing should cease when no more dirt or grit is found on the screen. 

Bjorklnnd et al. (1982) report experimental results on the evalnation of a single 30-mesh gauze screen and a dual 20-mesh gauze screen flame arresters using propane-air and ethylene-air mixtures. The test results are as follows ... 

Sand Content. The sand content in mud is determined using a 200-mesh sieve screen 2 in. in diameter, a funnel to fit the screen, and a glass measuring tube. The measuring tube is marked for the volume of mud to be added to read directly the volume percent of sand on the bottom of the tube. 

Wheat straw was obtained from Silsoe Research Institute (Silsoe, Bedfordshire, UK), and was dried in a cabinet oven with air circulation at bO C for 16 h. The dried wheat straw was then ground using a Christie Laboratory mill to pass a 60-mesh size screen and stored at 5°C until use. All chemicals were of analytical or regent grade. All experiments were performed in duplicate and yield is given on a dry wheat straw weight basis. 

The closest separations are acquired by standard testing screens and with spherical particles. Even in this case, an overlap occurs between the largest particles in the underflow and the smallest particles in the overflow. The overlap is particularly marked when the particles are needlelike or fibrous, or where the particles tend to form collections or groups that act as big particles. Some long, thin particles may hit the screen sidewise and be retained. Industrial screens commonly provide poorer separations as compared to testing screens of the same mesh opening while working on the same mixture.

A funnel with a clamped rubber tube on the stem is placed in a ring stand. A circular mesh screen is placed across the funnel approximately one-third from the top, a portion of coarse fabric such as muslin is placed on the screen, and feces is added. Tap water at 37°C is added so that the water just touches the feces. Let the specimen stand 1 h, remove 2 ml of fluid from the stem, and centrifuge the sample at 300 x g for 3 min. Prepare a wet mount of sediment, and examine it for larvae.
