Applications of solubility parameters include selecting compatible solvents for coating resins, predicting the swelling of cured elastomers by solvents, estimating solvent vapor pressure in polymer solutions for devolatilization and reaction systems (16), and predicting phase equihhria for polymer-polymer (107), polymer-binary (93), random copolymer (102), and multicomponent solvents (38, 98,108,109). 

Most organic compounds, including aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, esters, ketones, ethers, and carboxyUc acids are miscible with nitroparaffins, whereas alkanes and cycloalkanes have limited solubiUty. The lower nitroparaffins are excellent solvents for coating materials, waxes, resins, gums, and dyes.

The major uses of mixed xylene are in aviation gasoline and protective coatings, and as a solvent for alkyd resins, lacquers, enamels and rubber cements. wetrr-Xylene is used as a solvent, as an intermediate for dyes and organic synthesis, especially isophthalic acid and insecticides, and in aviation fuel or// o-xylene is used in manufacture of phthalic anhydride, vitamin and pharmaceutical synthesis, dyes, insecticides, motor fuels para-xylene is used in synthesis of terephthalic acid for polyester resins and fibres, vitamin and pharmaceutical syntheses, and insecticides (Lewis, 1993). 

These branched alcohol products are also useful in solvents, plasticizers, and monomers. For example, isobutyl alcohol is converted into the acetate ester, which is used extensively as a lacquer solvent. Isobutyl alcohol is also used in lubricating oils and in the production of amide resins. Propyl alcohol (59 million kg/yr) is used heavily in herbicide syntheses and in solvents for coatings and inks. 

Several nitrate paraffins (e.g., nitromethane, nitroethane and nitropropane) are used as solvents for cellulosic resins and for vinyl and epoxy surface coatings. Nitromethane is also used as a chlorinated solvent stabilizer. It is estimated that the annual consumption of nitric acid for nitroparaffin production is in the 30,000 tonne per year range.
