Soft capsules

Besides widening the clinical use, the research on rifaximin is also focused on the synthesis of new derivatives [173, 273] and on the development of original formulations, like soft capsules [274] and a gum-like device [275], designed for the controlled and continuous release of rifaximin. The former preparation, being bioadhesive, could be particularly useful in the Helicobacter eradication from the stomach whereas the latter should make the treatment of infections of the oral cavity possible, thus expanding the spectrum of clinical use.

Gelatin is produced by partial acid or partial alkaline hydrolysis of animal collagen. It has a wide variety of therapeutic and pharmaceutical uses. It is often used in the manufacture of hard and soft capsule shells, suppositories and tablets, and is sometimes used as a sponge during surgical procedures, as it can absorb many times its own weight of blood. 

Capsules These are small gelatin contains shells. Capsules are of two types -hard soft capsules. 

Soft capsules are used for oils and solution of active drugs e.g. cap. vitamins A, A D, E, garlic pearls, seven seas etc. 

Soft capsules are also used for semisolid (ointment) e.g. eye applicaps of Chloromycetin. 

Capsule The absorption of capsule is also dependent on their type e.g. hard capsule and soft capsule. The hard capsule dissolves much more readily in gastrointestinal tract as compared to soft capsules. 

Biochemical effects of the non-steroidal oestrogen 2,6-cis-diphenyl-hexamethyl-cyclotetrasiloxane (Cisobitan ) were also investigated in mans8. Pharmacokinetic and clinical studies have been performed at Radiumhemmet, Stockholm, in patients with poorly differentiated prostatic carcinoma. The pharmaceutical preparation was made as a soy bean oil solution in soft capsules containing 100 mg Cisobitan per capsule.

Sometimes known as shell pessaries. They are generally similar to soft capsules and come in various shapes, usually ovoid to ease insertion to the vagina... 

Capsules, particularly soft capsules, have been used as vaginal drug delivery systems, but with modest popularity. These systems are relatively stable, particularly when compared with semisolid formulations or vaginal suppositories, being an adequate way to deliver liquid drugs within a solid dosage form.
