Propylene glycol esters of fatty acids such as propylene glycol laurate and propylene glycol monolaurate can be used alone or as a cosurfactant. Menatetrenone (also known as vitamin K2) is used in the treatment of osteoporosis and is practically water insoluble and formulated as a solution in propylene glycol esters of fatty acids and glyceryl monooleate as 15 mg Glakay soft gelatin capsules. 

Ritonavir, an HIV protease inhibitor with peptidelike structure, has an intrinsic water solubility of l.Opg/ml. Norvir is a thermodynamically stable solution formulation containing 100 mg of ritonavir dissolved in a mixture of oleic acid, Cremophor EL, ethanol, and the antioxidant butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), and filled into soft gelatin capsules. However, Norvir is being replaced by Kaletra oral solution and soft gelatin capsule, which is a combination of 133.3 mg of lopinavir and 33.3 mg ritonavir dissolved in a mixture of oleic acid, polyoxyl 35 castor oil (Cremophor EL), and propylene glycol. The water-insoluble HIV protease inhibitor, saquinavir, is solubilized by a mixture of Vitamin E and medium-chain mono- and diglycerides in 200 mg Fortovase soft gelatin capsules.

A mixture of PEG 400 and propylene glycol is commonly used in over-the-counter soft gelatin capsules, as is a mixture of PEG 400 and medium-chain triglycerides. Some prescription products contain a mixture of peppermint oil and PEG 400. 

A mixture of PEG 400, propylene glycol, and 8% ethanol can be used in soft gelatin capsules. 

A mixture of PEG 400, propylene glycol, and 8% ethanol solubilizes 50, 100 or 200 pg of digoxin in Lanoxicap soft gelatin capsules. The absolute oral bioavailability of digoxin from the Lanoxicap soft gelatin capsules is 90-100%, compared to 60-80% for the tablets. The dose of digoxin is 50-350 pg per day, which is one to three capsules. 

A mixture of oleic add, cremophor EL and propylene glycol solubilizes 133.3 mg of lopinavir and 33.3 mg of ritonavir, which are water-insoluble HIV protease inhibitors used in the treatment of HIV infection, in the hxed-dose combination Kaletra soft gelatin capsules. The dose of Kaletra is three capsules twice daily and the product must be stored refrigerated at 2—8°C or at controlled room temperature for no more than two months. Kaletra has been available in the UK since 2001, and is also available in the USA. 

Ritonavir is formulated as both Norvir soft gelatin capsules and Norvir oral solution, which contains 80 mg/mL of ritonavir solubilized in a mixture of cremophor EL, propylene glycol, 42% ethanol, water, and peppermint oil. The pediatric dose of ritonavir is 250—450 mg/m or up to a maximum of 600 mg (7.5 mL) twice daily. The total amount of ethanol administered in conjunction with a daily adult dose of ritonavir as the oral solution... 

There are a few marketed drug delivery systems containing microemulsions that are related to the lipid systems we describe here. Sandimmune Neoral (Novartis, Switzerland) [17], which delivers the lipophilic peptide cyclosporin A, is based on medium-chain triglycerides obtained from coconut oil, a semisynthetic emulsifier (ricinoleate), and propylene glycol. The absorption of the drug taken orally as a microemulsion increases dramatically compared to that of an aqueous suspension [17]. Another marketed example, in which Cs/Cio triglycerides from coconut oil are used, is a soft gelatin capsule of vitamin D3 [18].
