Dimeihylamine, C2H7N, (CH3)2NH. Colourless, inflammable liquid with an ammoniacal odour, mp -96" C, b.p. 7°C. Occurs naturally in herring brine. Prepared in the laboratory by treating nitrosodimetbyl-aniline with a hot solution of sodium hydroxide. Dimethylamine is largely used in the manufacture of other chemicals. These include the solvents dimethylacetamide and dimethyl-formamide, the rocket propellant unsym-metrical dimethylhydrazine, surface-active agents, herbicides, fungicides and rubber accelerators. [Pg.260]

Sodium hydroxide is manufactured by electrolysis of concentrated aqueous sodium chloride the other product of the electrolysis, chlorine, is equally important and hence separation of anode and cathode products is necessary. This is achieved either by a diaphragm (for example in the Hooker electrolytic cell) or by using a mercury cathode which takes up the sodium formed at the cathode as an amalgam (the Kellner-Solvay ceW). The amalgam, after removal from the electrolyte cell, is treated with water to give sodium hydroxide and mercury. The mercury cell is more costly to operate but gives a purer product. [Pg.130]

Early demand for chlorine centered on textile bleaching, and chlorine generated through the electrolytic decomposition of salt (NaCl) sufficed. There are several processes available for the manufacture of cryoHte. The choice is mainly dictated by the cost and quaUty of the available sources of soda, alumina, and fluoriae. Starting materials iaclude sodium aluminate from Bayer s alumina process hydrogen fluoride from kiln gases or aqueous hydrofluoric acid sodium fluoride ammonium bifluoride, fluorosiUcic acid, fluoroboric acid, sodium fluosiUcate, and aluminum fluorosiUcate aluminum oxide, aluminum sulfate, aluminum chloride, alumina hydrate and sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, sodium chloride, and sodium aluminate. [Pg.144]

Methylene iodide [75-11-6], CH2I2, also known as diio dome thane, mol wt 267.87, 94.76% I, mp 6.0°C, and bp 181°C, is a very heavy colorless Hquid. It has a density of 3.325 g/mL at 20°C and a refractive index of 1.7538 at 4°C. It darkens in contact with air, moisture, and light. Its solubiHty in water is 1.42 g/100 g H2O at 20°C it is soluble in alcohol, chloroform, ben2ene, and ether. Methylene iodide is prepared by reaction of sodium arsenite and iodoform with sodium hydroxide reaction of iodine, sodium ethoxide, and hydroiodic acid on iodoform the oxidation of iodoacetic acid with potassium persulfate and by reaction of potassium iodide and methylene chloride (124,125). Diiodoform is used for determining the density and refractive index of minerals. It is also used as a starting material in the manufacture of x-ray contrast media and other synthetic pharmaceuticals (qv). [Pg.366]

Maleic Anhydride. The ACGIH threshold limit value in air for maleic anhydride is 0.25 ppm and the OSHA permissible exposure level (PEL) is also 0.25 ppm (181). Maleic anhydride is a corrosive irritant to eyes, skin, and mucous membranes. Pulmonary edema (collection of fluid in the lungs) can result from airborne exposure. Skin contact should be avoided by the use of mbber gloves. Dust respirators should be used when maleic anhydride dust is present. Maleic anhydride is combustible when exposed to heat or flame and can react vigorously on contact with oxidizers. The material reacts exothermically with water or steam. Violent decompositions of maleic anhydride can be catalyzed at high temperature by strong bases (sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide, alkaU metals, and amines). Precaution should be taken during the manufacture and use of maleic anhydride to minimize the presence of basic materials. [Pg.459]

The cmde sulfonation product, without isolation or purification of 2-naphthalenesulfonic acid, is used to make 1,6-, 2,6-, and 2,7-naphthalenedisulfonic acids and 1,3,6-naphthalenetrisulfonic acid by further sulfonation. By nitration, 5- and 8-nitro-2-naphthalenesulfonic acids, [89-69-1] and [117-41-9] respectively, are obtained, which are intermediates for Cleve s acid. All are dye intermediates. The cmde sulfonation product can be condensed with formaldehyde or alcohols or olefins to make valuable wetting, dispersing, and tanning agents. [Pg.491]

Acid-cataly2ed hydroxylation of naphthalene with 90% hydrogen peroxide gives either 1-naphthol or 2-naphthiol at a 98% yield, depending on the acidity of the system and the solvent used. In anhydrous hydrogen fluoride or 70% HF—30% pyridine solution at — 10 to + 20°C, 1-naphthol is the product formed in > 98% selectivity. In contrast, 2-naphthol is obtained in hydroxylation in super acid (HF—BF, HF—SbF, HF—TaF, FSO H—SbF ) solution at — 60 to — 78°C in > 98% selectivity (57). Of the three commercial methods of manufacture, the pressure hydrolysis of 1-naphthaleneamine with aqueous sulfuric acid at 180°C has been abandoned, at least in the United States. The caustic fusion of sodium 1-naphthalenesulfonate with 50 wt % aqueous sodium hydroxide at ca 290°C followed by the neutralization gives 1-naphthalenol in a ca 90% yield. [Pg.497]

Naphthalenol. 2-Naphthol or p-naphthol or 2-hydroxynaphthalene/7i3 -/5 -i7 melts at 122°C and boils at 295°C, and forms colorless crystals of characteristic, phenoHc odor which darken on exposure to air or light. 2-Naphthol [135-19-3] is manufactured by fusion of sodium 2-naphthalenesulfonate with sodium hydroxide at ca 325°C, acidification of the drowned fusion mass which is quenched ia water, isolation and water-washing of the 2-naphthalenol, and vacuum distillation and flaking of the product. A continuous process of this type has been patented (69). The high sulfate content ia the primary effluent from 2-naphthol production is greatiy reduced ia modem production plants by the recovery of sodium sulfate. [Pg.498]

Naphthalenediol. 1,5-Dihydroxynaphthalene or Asurol is a colorless material which darkens on exposure to air. It is manufactured by the fusion of disodium 1,5-naphthalenedisulfonate with sodium hydroxide at ca 320°C in high yield. 1,5-Naphthalenediol is an important coupling component, giving ortho-a2o dyes which form complexes with chromium. The metallised dyes produce fast black shades on wool. 1,5-Naphthalenediol can be aminated with ammonia under pressure to 1,5-naphthalenediamine. [Pg.500]

This process is no longer economical in the leading industrial countries. UBE Industries (Japan), for instance, once employed this process, but has been operating the newest diaLkyl oxalate process since 1978.
