Economic Aspects. Manufacturing facilities for CFG alternatives are just now coming on line. The size of the markets for the alternatives is estimated to be quite large (several thousand t/yr), but it will not be as large as the prior markets for CFCs themselves. This is largely because of the higher cost of the alternatives, typically 3—5 times that of the incumbents. Low value-in-use appHcations which caimot support the cost of the alternatives will disappear or will switch to not-in-kind alternatives such as hydrocarbons for foam blowing. 

The concentration of most metals in the earth s cmst is very low, and even for abundant elements such as aluminum and iron, extraction from common rock is not economically feasible. An ore is a metallic deposit from which the metal can be economically extracted. The amount of valuable metal in the ore is the tenor, or ore grade, usually given as the wt % of metal or oxide. The tenor and the type of metallic compounds are the main characteristics of an ore. These companies account for approximately 60% of total U.S. benzene capacity (65). 

The standard sized sheets are four ft (1.22 m) wide and from 8 to 16 ft long. Sheets are available in thicknesses from j up to 1 in. (0.63 to 2.5 cm), but the most common thicknesses are S and 5/8 in. (1.3 and 1.6 cm). There are special products for bathrooms, such as moisture-resistant board (3% of market) and sheathing appHcations (2% of market), but the vast majority of the product sold is either standard board (60% of market) or the fire-rated Type X board (29% of market). Type X (1.6 cm thick) is the basis of most of the one-hour fire walls in buildings built since the 1960s.
