Some molybdenum contain from 0.002% to 0.2% rhenium. More than 150,000 troy ounces of rhenium are now being produced yearly in the United States. The total estimated Free World reserve of rhenium metal is 3500 tons. Rhenium metal is prepared by reducing ammonium perrhentate with hydrogen at elevated temperatures. 

The concentration of most metals in the earth s cmst is very low, and even for abundant elements such as aluminum and iron, extraction from common rock is not economically feasible. An ore is a metallic deposit from which the metal can be economically extracted. The amount of valuable metal in the ore is the tenor, or ore grade, usually given as the wt % of metal or oxide. Eor precious metals, the tenor is given in grams per metric ton or troy ounces per avoirdupois short ton (2000 pounds). The tenor and the type of metallic compounds are the main characteristics of an ore. The economic feasibihty of ore processing, however, depends also on the nature, location, and size of the deposit the availabihty and cost of a suitable extraction process and the market price of the metal.

Ru and Os, along with Ir, are regarded as the minor platinum metals, being obtained largely as byproducts in the production of Pt, Pd and Rh, and their annual world production is only of the order of tonnes. To make one fluid ounce of a saturated solution multiply the grams of substance per 100 ml of saturated solution by 4.55 to obtain number of grains required, by 0.01039 to obtain the number of avoirdupois ounces, by 0.00947 to obtain the number of apothecaries (Troy) ounces also, multiply the ml of water by 16.23 to obtain the number of minims, or divide by 100 to obtain the number of fluid ounces. 

The United States 1986 net import reliance approximated 60% of apparent domestic consumption. Despite this, the 1986 U.S. dependence on foreign imports decreased. Import levels fell from 152.6 million troy ounces in 1985 to 144.9 million troy ounces in 1986 (Reese 1986). 

The largest decrease in imported silver was from the United Kingdom and Switzerland. For these two countries import levels fell by 18.1 million ounces, primarily in the form of refined bullion. A total of 125.4 million troy ounces of refined silver were imported in 1986 with only 9.5 million troy ounces accounted for in other forms. 

Precious metals are usually weighed in troy ounces.
