Size and complexity

In this section, I present a few illustrative examples of applications of NMR relaxation studies within different branches of chemistry. The three subsections cover one story each, in order of increasing molecular size and complexity of the questions asked. [Pg.1513]

The various basis sets used in a calculation of the H and S integrals for a system are attempts to obtain a basis set that is as close as possible to a complete set but to stay within practical limits set by the speed and memory of contemporary computers. One immediately notices that the enterprise is directly dependent on the capabilities of available computers, which have become more powerful over the past several decades. The size and complexity of basis sets in common use have increased accordingly. Whatever basis set we choose, however, we are attempting to strike a balance. If the basis set is too small, it is inaeeurate if it is too large, it exceeds the capabilities of our computer. Whether our basis set is large or small, if we attempt to calculate all the H and S integrals in the secular matrix without any infusion of empirical information, the procedure is described as ab initio. [Pg.242]

Reinforced Thermoplastic Sheet. This process uses precombined sheets of thermoplastic resin and glass fiber reinforcement, cut into blanks to fit the weight and size requirements of the part to be molded. The blanks, preheated to a specified temperature, are loaded into the metal mold and the material flows under mol ding pressure to fiU the mold. The mold is kept closed under pressure until the temperature of the part has been reduced, the resin solidified, and demolding is possible. Cycle time, as with thermosetting resins, depends on the thickness of the part and the heat distortion temperature of the resin. Mol ding pressures are similar to SMC, 10—21 MPa (1500—3000 psi), depending on the size and complexity of the part. [Pg.96]

Variables Held Constant. FiaaHy, some variables should be held constant ia the experiment. Holding a variable constant limits the size and complexity of the experiment but, as previously noted, can also limit the scope of the resulting inferences. There has been a continual increase in size and complexity of PCBs with a concurrent reduction in conductor and hole dimensions. The increase in unit size and complexity together with the higher turbine inlet temperature, and higher pressure ratio has lead to an increase in overall gas turbine efficiency. Loop Tests Loop test installations vary widely in size and complexity, but they may be divided into two major categories (c) thermal-convection loops and (b) forced-convection loops. In both types, the liquid medium flows through a continuous loop or harp mounted vertically, one leg being heated whilst the other is cooled to maintain a constant temperature across the system.
