Liquids are most economically stored in bulk containers. When large quantities above 25,000 gal must be stored, the tanks should be constructed to the dimensions given by the American Petroleum Institute Standards (see Table 5-2). These tanks must be field-erected. For smaller quantities more economical shop-constructed tanks should be specified. Field fabrication is always more expensive than shop fabrication. A shop-constructed item, in general, must be less than 11.5 ft (3.5 m) in diameter, so that it can be shipped by truck or train. For any piece of equipment that must be shop-fabricated, or for which the cost of field construction is prohibitive, this limitation should be noted. When barges may be used for transportation, this limitation does not hold. [Pg.108]

A modular 250-MW reactor of this type could be constructed off-site and then shipped by truck or train. This could shorten construction time by 2 years with corresponding cost savings. China and South Africa plan to build full-scale prototypes. [Pg.290]

Caution Tetranitromethane is nasty stuff, it explodes on contact with most any impurity, and is toxic and conosive. For these reasons it cannot be shipped UPS it must be trucked and the shipping will cost a minimum of 50. Even if you order 1 g you pay 50 shipping, so if you are going to order some you may as well get as much as you can possibly afford. It is possible to have a university or analytical lab make some for you, but the cost of these little outfits may overcome the high shipping costs from the major suppliers. Some models also include transportation mode selection (e.g., air freight, ship or truck transport, full container load or less than container load) either solely based on cost comparisons or also considering the trade-off between transportation costs and pipeline inventory or lead time (cf. Zeng 2002 Vidal and Goetschalckx 2000, pp. 106-107 Jayaraman 1998, pp. 474-476). Due to the limited importance of transport costs in specialty chemicals and the fact that products are typically transported between plants and markets in full container loads this level of detail does not provide additional insights. [Pg.89]

The 50% aqueous acrylamide is the preferred form because it eliminates the handling of solids and because its cost is lower. This is a result of the new manufacturing method put into effect in 1971. The aqueous form is applicable to nearly all the end uses of acrylamide when volume is taken into account. Aqueous acrylamide is shipped in tank trucks, rail cars, or dmms, but small samples can also be obtained. The solution should be kept in stainless steel or in tanks coated with plastic resin (phenolic, epoxy, or polypropylene). All containers, including tank trucks and rail cars, must be rinsed prior to disposal or return. When shipping costs are an important consideration, solid acrylamide may be the desired form. Acrylamide should be stored in a well ventilated area away from sunlight. The temperature should be under 30°C, and under these conditions no change of quality should be noticed for at least 3 months. Typical specifications for the 50% aqueous solution are shown in Table 5 and for the solid monomer in Table 6. [Pg.135]

Slip-Sheet Systems. Such systems enable a unit load to be handled and moved without being supported on a pallet type of platform. Slip sheets (Fig. 4.5) are made of heavy corrugated paper-board, plastic, or kraft fiber composition and function as the base surface for the unit load. Special equipment or push-pull forklift truck attachments are required to move and handle loads unitized by this method. The cost benefits of slip-sheet systems are obvious in addition to lower initial cost, storage space requirements are foo of the cube required for empty pallets and shipping costs are less than for comparable loads using wood pallets. [Pg.168]

The reverse occurs in the production of foams and consumer items. These plants are usually constructed close to the prospective markets. Insulating materials are often so light that the cost of shipping per ton is very high. Only a small amount of mass can be loaded in a boxcar or truck. The density of polystyrene is 2.4 lb/ft3 (38.5kg/m3). It is made from styrene, which has a density of 56.3 lb/ft3 (902 kg/m3). The foam product occupies 23 times as much space as the styrene, and the polystyrene would cost between 10 and 20 times as much to ship. [Pg.27]

This would reduce the cost of inventory space, management, and insurance (it would also result in customers receiving fresher products where this is a factor). Furthermore, in applications where certificates of analysis are required prior to shipping or acceptance, time saved may translate into material holding and/or labor savings (e. g., for truck driver s or tanker crew s idle time awaiting authorization to depart). [Pg.11]
