Service-oriented architecture (SOA) is a hot topic these days and is considered by many people to be the enterprise computing framework of the future. In SOA, each software unit runs on a piece of hardware as a service that can be called by many different consumers. For example, a compound registration service can be called by a library enumeration tool and a chemistry e-notebook to fulfill compound registration tasks. The most popular SOA is Web services that are based on HTTP and XML or SOAP standards although SOA as a concept has existed for awhile and is not limited to Web services. SOA has a lot of advantages, the most important of which is code reuse and improved productivity. However, it also presents a lot of challenges. [Pg.42]

Pipeline Pilot is deployed as a client/server system, with desktop PCs connecting to a central service-oriented architecture deployed on an Apache Web server. The server maintains a repository of components and protocols, in addition to its role as a computational engine. Jobs are spawned to run protocols and provide feedback to the client. These facilities are exposed as standard Web services. [Pg.437]

On the other hand, the results demonstrate the importance of the attitudes of the service providers. Computer specialists who are clearly user oriented, that is, who are communicative and responsive to user needs and are committed to improving existing applications and proposing appropriate new ones, seem best able to satisfy end users criteria for higher quality computing services. Researchers emphasize the importance of a positive sociotechnical interface between end users and computing specialists, in addition to good operational performance (e.g., low incidence of technical problems). [Pg.1220]

One of the key elements of each distributed platform is communication between computer nodes and management of reliable network connections. All service-driven platforms are usually focused on communication protocols and service execution using a form of network middleware. However, most do not have a service-oriented operating system that deals with efficient management of services as platform commands, front-end programming (service scripting), and rehable runtime networking. [Pg.76]

The domain-specific problems expressed with the higher expressive power of DSLs and adequate service-oriented syntax and semantics allow end users to be focused on their domain problems and solution. Unfortunately, the common service-based practice forces end users to leam back-end software-programming languages, development processes, and creating software for computers instead of writing easily understandable and modifiable front-end domain-specific mograms for and by others and themselves. [Pg.80]

The key feature of service orientation is provisioning of required capabilities and resources on-demand from service providers. The services are composed together to create a supply chain suited for current or expected business opportunities. The service-oriented approach minimizes fixed investments and ramp-up time. It relies on using advanced information technologies and cloud computing as discussed in Part III of this book. [Pg.21]

Enterprise applications. Legacy systems, ERP systems, specialized applications and service-oriented applications ensure transactional data processing and business process execution. They serve as data sources and consumers to decisionmaking applications mainly custom-built systems supporting specific functional areas of enterprises. Legacy systems are developed on the basis of outdated computing platforms. [Pg.202]
