Concurrent engineering

The automotive sector s quality assurance standard QS 9000 (1998) suggests a concurrent high level model, as opposed to the sequential model from BS 7000 (1997). This is shown in Figure 5.7. The automotive industry in particular has embraced the use of concurrent engineering models for product development, and this is reflected in the standards which facilitate their quality assurance programmes. A concurrent industrial model from the automotive sector will be discussed later. [Pg.258]

DFA is one of the main tools and techniques prescribed by the PIM process. Other tools and techniques currently specified include QFD, FMEA and DOE. Significant benefits have been obtained through the use of the tools and techniques in a team-based concurrent engineering environment. They inject method, objectivity... [Pg.261]

A key success factor for reducing the costs and lead times for vehicle manufacturers, for example, is the degree of integration of the suppliers within the product development process. This is seen as a natural extension to concurrent engineering principles (Wyatt et al., 1998). For many years, in engineering companies, a substantial proportion of the finished product, typically two thirds, consists of components or subassemblies produced by suppliers (Noori and Radford, 1995). [Pg.271]

Early integration of material modification, product application, and process optimization. This integration reduces cycle time and up-front risk. Today s fast-moving markets cannot accommodate a 20-year development cycle and still ensure commercial success. Concurrent engineering with discovery and manufacturing is required to be a leader. [Pg.46]

A winding machine is typically equipped with computer control, and its programming is done offline. Winding pattern programs are often provided that interface with CAD programs and finite element analysis code. Such tools greatly enhance the process of concurrent engineering. Moreover, computer control allows the precise placement of the fiber on the part such that gap/overlap is minimized and the fiber orientation is controlled precisely. The... [Pg.395]
