Introduction and commercial application Investment opportunities in the exploration and production (E P) sector of oil and gas business are abundant. Despite areas such as the North Sea, Gulf of Mexico and the North Slope in Alaska being mature areas, there are still many new fields under development in those regions, and new areas of business interest are opening up in South America, Africa and South East Asia. Some fields which have a production history of decades are being redeveloped, such as the Pedernales Field in Venezuela. [Pg.303]

Commercial mass analyzers are based almost entirely on quadrupoles, magnetic sectors (with or without an added electric sector for high-resolution work), and time-of-flight (TOE) configurations or a combination of these. There are also ion traps and ion cyclotron resonance instruments. These are discussed as single use and combined (hybrid) use. [Pg.280]

Pubhc sector aquaculture involves production of aquatic animals to augment or estabUsh recreational and commercial fisheries. PubHc sector aquaculture is widely practiced in North America and to a lesser extent in other parts of the world. The FAO definition of aquaculture also indicates that farming implies ownership of the organisms being cultured, which would seem to exclude pubhc sector aquaculture. [Pg.12]

Full details of this work were pubHshed (6) and the processes, or variants of them, were introduced in a number of other countries. In the United States, the pharmaceutical industry continued to provide manufacturing sites, treating plasma fractionation as a normal commercial activity. In many other countries processing was undertaken by the Red Cross or blood transfusion services that emerged following Wodd War II. In these organisations plasma fractionation was part of a larger operation to provide whole blood, blood components, and speciaUst medical services on a national basis. These different approaches resulted in the development of two distinct sectors in the plasma fractionation industry ie, a commercial or for-profit sector based on paid donors and a noncommercial or not-for-profit sector based on unpaid donors. [Pg.526]

Estimates for a number of economic aspects of plasma fractionation can be made (200—206). The world capacity for plasma fractionation exceeded 20,000 t of plasma in 1990 and has increased by about 75% since 1980, with strong growth in the not-for-profit sector (Fig. 4). The quantity of plasma processed in 1993 was about 17,000 t/yr the commercial sector accounts for about 70% of this, with over 8000 t/yr in the form of source plasma from paid donors (Fig. 5). Plant capacities and throughput are usually quoted in terms of principal products, such as albumin and Factor VIII. These figures may not encompass manufacture of other products. [Pg.533]

Between 1979 and 1991, the amounts of herbicide apphed in the United States have remained constant, but the expenditures on herbicides have increased 54%. Agricultural costs accounted for ah. of this increase and more, since herbicide user expenditures in the government/commercial and home sectors combined dropped 3 to 4% during that period. Increased weed control costs related to crop protection have also contributed to the 37% increase, since 1988, in total annual user expenditures for pesticides in general, ie, herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides. In the United States, agricultural uses (ca 1993) account for more than 67% of total pesticide user expenses and 75% of the quantity used annually. Herbicides are now the lea ding type of pesticides in terms of both user expenditures and volumes used (1). [Pg.54]

A newer hybrid system available commercially is the magnetic sector—TOF hybrid (38). The precursor ions can be selected with better than unit—mass resolution by msl and the product ion ions detected at high sensitivity by the TOF ms2 (39). [Pg.544]

Future Uses. The most recent uses for methanol can be found in the agricultural sector. Test studies are being carried out where methanol is sprayed directly onto crops to improve plant growth. Methanol can be used as a carbon source for the production of single-cell protein (SCP) for use as an animal feed supplement. The process has been commercially demonstrated by ICl at their BiUingham, U.K., faciUty. However, the production of SCP is not commercially practical at this time, in comparison to more conventional protein sources. [Pg.282]

Demand. The demand for uranium in the commercial sector is primarily determined by the requirements of power reactors. At the beginning of 1993, there were 424 nuclear power plants operating worldwide, having a combined capabity of about 330 GWe. Moderate but steady growth is projected for nuclear capacity to the year 2010. The capacity in 2010 is expected to be about 446 GWe (29). [Pg.187]

Synthesis. Exploratory research has produced a wide variety of odorants based on natural stmctures, chemicals analogous to naturals, and synthetic materials derived from available raw materials and economical processing. As in most areas of the chemical industry, the search for new and useful substances is made difficult by the many materials that have been patented and successfully commercialized (4). In the search for new aroma chemicals, many new materials are prepared for screening each year. Chemists who perform this work are involved in a creative exercise that takes its direction from the commercial sector in terms of desirable odor types and specific performance needs. Because of economic limitations, considerations of raw material costs and available processing methods may play a role eady in the exploratory work. [Pg.84]

Vitamin A constitutes the most significant sector of the commercial retinoid market and is used primarily in the feed area. In the pharmaceutical area, there are several important therapeutic dermatologic agents which stmcturaHy resemble vitamin A and they are depicted in Figure 2 (see Pharmaceuticals). Commercial BMI Resins. Since the late 1960s, bismaleimide resins have been commercially available. The first company in the marketplace was Rhc ne Poulenc Chimie, Erance. Several others, Technochemie, Germany CIBA GEIGY, Switzerland DSM, The Netherlands, BASE, West Germany Mitsubishi Gas Chemicals and MitsuiToatsu, both of Japan Reichhold and Polyorganics from the United States and Shell Chemical Company, United States (through the acquisition of Technochemie by Deutsche Shell AG), followed. Some of them lost interest in this speciaUty market sector. Table 13 indicates the BMI resins available at the end of 1992. No reference is made to prepreg systems available from various sources. Despite the attractions of economic forces driving environmental protection, some cautions and failures have been noted. Firstly, the export of hazardous waste to countries where costs for treatment are lower enhances environmental risks during transport and has the potential for transboundary export in the event of pollution. At the same time, the loss of raw material may deprive the home market of an adequate supply of feedstock for the home-based industry. Secondly, there is considerable scepticism that self-regulation of TBT-based antifoulants could be achieved in a timely manner by the shipping industry. This is an instance where the cost benehts to one industry are born by another commercial sector, notably aquaculture. Thus, protection of the marine environment is likely to be aided by economic factors but the role of government, via taxation and standard setting, is not likely to be usurped. Public education and, in turn, pressure, can promote and support corporate environmentalism. [Pg.90]
