But even the Scotts company, a dominant firm in lawn care chemicals and services, insists in its own messages to shareholders and consumers that beautiful lawns don t just happen. To make this landscape normal, as we shall see, requires repeated representation both of the aesthetic ideal and the enormous battery of consumer goods and services that make it possible. This closely echoes the thinking of geographer Don Mitchell, who observes that distinct, meaningful, cultural objects like the modern lawn are actively that culture is not... [Pg.8]

As a result, hardware stores and nurseries-the traditional outlets for lawn care products have lost market share in chemical sales-and formulators have come to rely more heavily on a relatively smaller number of larger-scale customers home improvement and mass market retailers. A handful of North American retailers now account for most formulator pesticide sales, and mass sales and bulk wholesaling reduces formulator industry receipts as a result. Ten North American retailers account for 70% of sales from the Scotts Company, for example. Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Lowes, and the recently troubled Kmart provide 60% of sales, with Home Depot alone accounting for 28%. In fact, in 2003 Home Depot declared Scotts partner of the year. Competition among these retailers is intense, however. If any of these customers should falter, formulators will lose important outlets. [Pg.88]

Regulation increases other costs. Environmental violations arising from waste disposal, asbestos, or other hazards at production facilities have become an increasing fact of life for formulator firms. Scotts Company recently paid fines and cleanup costs for unlicensed waste disposal and asbestos contamination at several sites in the U.K. and Ohio. Federal, state, and local environmental regulators strictly regulate waste disposal from fertilizer- and pesticide-formulating plants. Companies also must be prepared for the potential costs of remediation or liability if any pesticide causes harm. ... [Pg.89]

This emphasis on marketing is also capital-intensive. Formulators now spend millions of dollars on television advertising where traditionally retailers shouldered such expenses. After purchasing a new pesticide line, Scotts Company spent twice as much as its former owner to advertise it. In 1998, with only about half the market share in yard care supplies, the company spent 75% of all the advertising dollars in the sector, and purchased 8 million of television airtime in 2002. ... [Pg.92]

EPSP synthase catalyzes the synthesis of EPSP by an addition-elimination reaction through the tetrahedral intermediate shown in Fig. 2a. This enzyme is on the shikimate pathway for synthesis of aromatic amino acids and is the target for the important herbicide, glyphosate, which is the active ingredient in Roundup (The Scotts Company EEC, Marysville, OH). Transient-state kinetic studies led to proof of this reaction mechanism by the observation and isolation of the tetrahedral intermediate. Moreover, quantification of the rates of formation and decay of the tetrahedral intermediate established that it was tmly an intermediate species on the pathway between the substrates (S3P and PEP) and products (EPSP and Pi) of the reaction. The chemistry of this reaction is interesting in that the enzyme must first catalyze the formation of the intermediate and then catalyze its breakdown, apparently with different requirements for catalysis. Quantification of the rates of each step of this reaction in the forward and reverse directions has afforded a complete description of the free-energy profile for the reaction and allows... [Pg.1884]

Aseptically packed orange juice in laminated carton packages (Tetra-Pack), was obtained from a local company. The packages contained 250 ml of juice. A control was maintained by immediately transferring juice from the cartons to brown glass bottles at the plant site. Quantification of d-limonene was done according to the Scott and Veldhuis titration method (16). [Pg.299]
