Scientific Terms

In this book the policy has been to use normal usage scientific terms. 

Temporary or carbonate hardness and alkalinity frequently, but not always, mean the same thing (see below). Bicarbonate or hydrogen carbonate is a more scientific term since alkalinity is actually the concentration of the bicarbonate (HCO3") ion in the water. 

Experience in the baking industry since World War II has shown that proper use of residual spray materials such as DDT and chlordan will most effectively control these casual invaders. When housekeeping in a bakery is maintained as near perfect as possible, the application of a residual layer of toxic insecticide on areas upon which casual invaders are most likely to travel in seeking harborage will effectively kill the invader individual before it has an opportunity to nest. Experience has borne out this theory in a general way, and specific data are now being collected which will describe it in more scientific terms.

In terms of informed policy decision, it would be desirable to relate information to both the input and to the output. However, working with secondary data implies that many studies do not provide complete information. In most cases, though, data on an environmental indicator is only available on the input, the per unit of land area basis. Although in scientific terms it is deplorable that most information is not available on a per unit of output basis, this is less problematic for today s practical EU policy. Food surpluses are more of a problem in the current political environment than food scarcity and there seems to be a broad consensus to keep the amount of farmland relatively stable. Therefore, in the EU, in most cases, the policy relevant way is to apply the data on environmental indicators to the input on a the per unit of land area term. 

Renwick (1995) discussed the possible rationale for the use of an additional safety factor for nature of toxicity in the estimation of Acceptable/Tolerable Daily Intake (ADI/TDI) values, including a survey of the historical use of such a factor. He concluded that the principal rationale for an additional factor for nature of toxicity is to provide a greater degree of separation of the ADI/TDI from the NOAEL observed in animal studies. The Introduction chapter contains the basic definitions of the main scientific terms, such as 5pectro5copy, luminescence spectroscopy, luminescent mineral, luminescent center, luminescence lifetime, luminescence spectrum and excitation spectrum. The state of the art in the steady-state luminescence of minerals field is presented. The main advantages of the laser-induced time resolved technique in comparison with the steady-state one are shortly described.

Again translating these issues into scientific terms sustainability is a complex of food security, cash security, environmental security, social security and last, but not least, cultural security. One can not go without the other. 

The direct transformation from the output pattern to the taste quality was performed here as one trial of expressing the actual human sensation using the output electrical pattern. Up to now the so-called catalytic process is the only way to produce c-BN on an industrial scale. However, catalytic is not the correct scientific term, because the activation energy for transformation is not decreased by these substances. The substances which are used have the function of a solvent, and are responsible for the formation of c-BN. This method is successful because of the different solubilities of c-BN and h-BN in the flux. The precursor substances form a eutectic melt with the h-BN [152]. If the reaction conditions are in the domain of stable c-BN, spontaneous crystallization takes place and the c-BN growth rate is relatively high. 

I believe that an examination of human history and our current situation provides the strongest argument for the need to develop state specific sciences. White carbon black is the global title for synthetic hydrated silica and silicate, scientifically termed hydrated silicon dioxide (Si02nH20), and is an important additive of rubber etc. [183].
