Field gravitational

Wliat is probably the simplest fonn of work to understand occurs when a force is used to raise the system in a gravitational field ... [Pg.326]

An interesting historical application of the Boltzmann equation involves examination of the number density of very small spherical globules of latex suspended in water. The particles are dishibuted in the potential gradient of the gravitational field. If an arbitrary point in the suspension is selected, the number of particles N at height h pm (1 pm= 10 m) above the reference point can be counted with a magnifying lens. In one series of measurements, the number of particles per unit volume of the suspension as a function of h was as shown in Table 3-3. [Pg.74]

Modes of Operation There is a close analogy between sedimentation of particles or macromolecules in a gravitational field and their elec trophoretic movement in an electric field. Both types of separation have proved valuable not only for analysis of colloids but also for preparative work, at least in the laboratoiy. Electrophoresis is applicable also for separating mixtures of simple cations or anions in certain cases in which other separating methods are ineffectual. [Pg.2007]

Hydrogen does not appear free in the atmosphere exeept at levels below 1 ppm, sinee rapid diffusivity enables moleeules to eseape the earth s gravitational field and it is eontinuously lost from the atmosphere. It is present in the earth s erust at about 0.87% in eombination with oxygen in water and with earbon and other elements in organie substanees. It is prepared eommereially on a small seale by aetion of sulphurie aeid on zine ... [Pg.282]

To determine the size of a particle having a velocity, w, in the gravitational field, both sides of equation 63 are multiplied by the complex Re/ArK ... [Pg.296]

Separation Rates in Tubular-and Solid-Bowl Centrifuges To evaluate the radial velocity of a particle moving toward a centrifuge wall, the expression for particle settling in a gravitational field is applied ... [Pg.528]

Depending on the particle diameter and properties of the liquid, the radial motion of particles will be laminar, turbulent or transitional. The motion of large particles at Re > 500 is turbulent. Therefore, their settling velocity in a gravitational field may be expressed as ... [Pg.528]

For example, at n = 1200 rpm = 20 liter/sec and r = 0.5 m, the settling velocity in the centrifuge is almost 28 times greater than that in free settling. Note that the above expressions are applicable only for Re > 500. For small particles. Re < 2, migration toward the wall is laminar. The proper settling velocity expression for the gravitational field is... [Pg.529]

Helium is the second most abundant element in the universe (76% H, 23% He) as a result of its synthesis from hydrogen (p. 9) but, being too light to be retained by the earth s gravitational field, all primordial helium has been lost and terrestrial helium, like argon, is the result of radioactive decay ( He from a-decay of heavier elements, " °Ar from electron capture by... [Pg.889]

Countercurrent chromatography (CCC) refers to a chromatographic technique which allows the separation of solutes in a two-phase solvent system subjected to a gravitational field. Two immiscible liquid phases, constituted by one or more solvents or solutions, are submitted to successive equilibria, where the solutes to be separated... [Pg.8]

Forces, such as the gravitational force, are transmitted by means of quantities that scientists call fields. All matter is influenced by forces carried by gravitational fields. Electrically charged particles are influenced by forces carried by electromagnetic fields. The gravitational and electromagnetic fields are not matter, but they have energy. [Pg.778]

These instruments serve to measure the earth s gravitational field with a maximum value of 1 g. The typical values of the characteristics are ... [Pg.909]

Our most important insight into the connection between thermodynamics and black holes comes from a celebrated result obtained by Bardeen, Carter and Hawking [bard73], that the four laws of black hole physics can be obtained by replacing, in the first and second laws of thermodynamics, the entropy and temperature of a thermodynamical system by the black hole event horizon (or boundary of the black hole) and surface gravity (which measures the strength of the gravitational field at the black hole s surface). [Pg.637]

Holder and Maass34 found that the lower critical end point was at 44.85°C, that is, 12.5°C above the critical temperature of pure ethane. They did not measure the pressure and their claim of having detected different solubilities in different parts of the fluid at temperatures above this point probably does not apply to a system at equilibrium in the absence of a gravitational field.66... [Pg.100]
