Scientific style

Finally, we hope that the style of this series will develop into something more personal and less academic than what has become the standard scientific style. Such a hope, however, is not likely to be completely realized until a certain degree of maturity... [Pg.411]

An attempt should be made to use a scientific style comparable in quality to the literary style expected in an essay. Correct spelling and grammar should not be disregarded just because the report is to be read by a scientist instead of a general reader. The report should be as concise and factual as possible without sacrificing clarity. In particular, mathematical equations should be accompanied by enough verbal material to make their meaning clear. [Pg.11]

Your main aim in developing a scientific style should be to get your message across directly and unambiguously. While you can try to achieve this through a set of rules (see Box 50.1), you may find other requirements driving your writing in a contradictory direction. For instance, the need to be accurate and complete may result in text littered with technical terms, and the flow may be continually interrupted by references to the literature. The need to be succinct... [Pg.326]

In this respect, at least, Fritz Haber was already the most American of imperial German scientists. He, too, was an impatient man of action, drawn to projects with immediate practical consequences. He hoped for a synthesis of the two scientific styles— German depth married to American practicality—in pursuit of a dream of progress that united both nations. [Pg.60]

Theoretical studies counted for much more than practice-oriented testing projects pubUshed papers and grants replaced patents and industrial experience as measures of good faculty. By the mid-1960s, the transition to an analytical and more scientific style was largely completed at most American engineering colleges [6]. [Pg.241]

Use of cited references is an important part of a technical report. Cited literature is a basic foundation for the reader to realize that the report makes sense within the state-of-the-art of the related discipline. For this reason, normally all the literature is cited in a technical report and, as such, the proper denominations should be References or Literature Cited. Bibliography is usually not an appropriate title for this section. Some textbooks and encyclopedias often refer to suggested readings or bibliography, that have not been cited in the text, for the reader to get further information on some topics discussed. In this section, each reference cited in the body of the report should be listed in detail, so that an interested reader can find the article, book, or report. There are several references styles used in scientific literature, such as the American Chemical Society style or the Harvard style. As long as the references listed are consistent, any scientific style can be used. [Pg.445]

When Longuet-Higgins succeeded Lennard-Jones as professor of theoretical chemistry in 1954, Boys remained a lecturer. Their scientific styles were very different, and there were often conflicts between the two, "sometimes quite painful to watch" (Handy, Pople, and Shavitt 1996, 6014). [Pg.284]

Academician A. V. Gorodyskiy was a well-known expert in the field of electrochemical kinetics. His scientific style was a rare and lucky combination of experimental skills and deep theoretic approach. For example, he introduced many new experimental techniques into the research practice. He had more than 50 inventions, mainly in the field of electrochemical energy storage. On the other hand, he deeply understood and developed further the modem quantum theory... [Pg.213]
