Scalp

Medicated Dandruff Shampoos. Dandmff is a scalp condition characterized by the production of excessive cellular material (18). A number of shampoos have been marketed which are designed to control and alleviate this condition, and many additives have been included in shampoo compositions to classify them as treatment products for dandmff. These additives include antimicrobial additives, eg, quaternary ammonium salts keratolytic agents, eg, saUcychc acid and sulfur heavy metals, eg, cadmium sulfide coal tar resorcinol and many others. More recent (ca 1993) systems use selenium sulfide [7488-56-4] or zinc pyrithione [13463-41 -7] as active antidandmff shampoo additives. Both of these additives are classified as dmgs, but can be found in over-the-counter products. A stronger version, incorporating the use of higher levels of selenium sulfide in a shampoo, is available but requires a prescription for purchase. [Pg.451]

Lead acetate can be used only for coloring scalp hair at a level not to exceed 0.6%, as lead, weight/volume of the product. The regulations provide specific restrictions (including label specifications) that lead acetate must not be used to color mustaches, eyelashes, eyebrows, or hair on parts of the body other than the scalp. [Pg.458]

Henna can be used only to color hair with the exception of eyelashes, eyebrows, or generally ia the area of the eye. The label for products containing henna must caution the consumer not to use ia the area of the eye or on cut or abraded scalp. [Pg.458]

Industrial screening is used essentially for separations over 0.2 mm and in conjunction with cmshers because the efficiency decreases rapidly as particle size decreases. The main objective is to remove undersize material that should not be circulated back to the cmshers, or to remove (scalp) oversize material or trash that should not report to the subsequent processing step. Other appHcations of screening include production of a specification size material (as in quarrys), dewatering, and trash removal from processed material. [Pg.398]

Medical Usage. Isopropyl alcohol is also used as an antiseptic and disinfectant for home, hospital, and industry (see Disinfectants and antiseptics). It is about twice as effective as ethyl alcohol in these appHcations (153,154). Rubbing alcohol, a popular 70 vol % isopropyl alcohol-in-water mixture, exemplifies the medicinal use of isopropyl alcohol. Other examples include 30 vol % isopropyl alcohol solutions for medicinal liniments, tinctures of green soap, scalp tonics, and tincture of mercurophen. It is contained in pharmaceuticals, eg, local anesthetics, tincture of iodine, and bathing solutions for surgical sutures and dressings. Over 200 uses of isopropyl alcohol have been tabulated (2). [Pg.113]

The process of pulverized cuUet reduction yields a product having near-batch equivalent sizing (—12 mesh (<1.7 mm mm)) and in a furnace-ready condition. Foil-backed paper, lead and other metals, and some tableware ceramics can be removed in an oversized scalping operation after the first pass through the system. Other contaminants are reduced to a fine particle size that can be assimilated into the glass composition during melting. [Pg.569]

Medicine and Nutrition. A stabilized buffered suspension of selenium sulfide has been marketed for many years as Selsun Blue (Abbott Laboratories) for control of seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp. A similar sulfur or selenium sulfide shampoo containing a metallic cation complex has been prepared (122). Topical appHcation of selenium sulfide controls dermatitis, pmritis, and mange iu dogs (see Cosmetics Veterinarydrugs). [Pg.337]

Ketoconazole. Initial observations indicating that oral administration of ketocona2ole (10) produced good results in seborrheic ec2ema and dandruff, led to the development of a 2% cream and a 2% shampoo (scalp gel) of this antimycotic (17,18). Naturally, these two topical forms of ketocona2ole [65277-42-1] are highly active against superficial mycoses. [Pg.254]

The scalping of flavor and aroma by a package can be minimised by placing a barrier material as near as possible to the food. The ingress of undesirable permeants from the environment can be minimised by placing a barrier polymer between the food and the environment, not necessarily near the food. [Pg.493]

In medicine, the internal uses of benzoic acid are relatively unimportant. Its principal medicinal use is external it is used in dermatology as an antiseptic stimulant and irritant. Combined with salicyLic acid [69-72-7] benzoic acid is employed in the treatment of ringworm of the scalp and other skin diseases (Whitfield s ointment). [Pg.55]

Hair colorants, the fourth class of color additives, may be used only to color scalp hair and may not be used in the area of the eye. Use of these colorants is exempt, that is, coal-tar hair dyes may be sold with cautionary labeling, directions for preliminary (patch) testing, and restrictions against use in or near the eye. The EDA diligently enforces the rules governing color additives and limits the use of, or even dehsts colorants deemed unsafe. The Hst of substances specifically prohibited for use in cosmetics is short. [Pg.286]

Scalping—Strictly, the removing of a small amount of oversize from a feed which is predominantly fines. Typically, the removal of oversize from a feed with approximately a maximum of 5% oversize and a minimum of 50% half-size. [Pg.1771]

Tr ash removal—Removal of extraneous foreign matter from a processed material. Essentially a form of scalping operation. Type of screen employed will depend on size range of processed material—coarse, fine, or ultrafine. [Pg.1771]

Cone crushers can be operated in open circuit with capacities shown in Table 20-12, or in closed circuit in parallel with scalping screens for multistage size reduction, as Table 20-13 shows (the product sizes are not comparable). The feed should not contain more than... [Pg.1844]

With other ores there has been a problem of buildup of intermediate-sized particles, but this has been solved either by adding a small load of steel balls, thus converting to a semiautogenous grinding system (SAG), or by sending the scalped intermediate-sized particles through a cone crusher. A flow sheet for a typical wet autogenous circuit is shown in Fig. 20-57. [Pg.1868]
