Satisfaction, defined

Thermal comfort may be defined as "that condition of mind in which satisfaction is expressed with the thermal environment" (4). It is thus defined by a statistically vaUd sample of people under very specific and controlled conditions. No single environment is satisfactory for everybody, even if all wear identical clothing and perform the same activity. The comfort zone specified in ASHRAE Standard 55 (5) is based on 90% acceptance, or 10% dissatisfied. 

From the standpoint of a military product, system effectiveness is the probabiUty that the system meets successfully an operational demand within a given time when operating under specified conditions. From the standpoint of commercial products, system effectiveness is harder to define, but basically means customer satisfaction. There are several system parameters that are important to the customer. Some of these parameters are defined below. 

Thermal comfort is defined as the condition of mind that expresses satisfaction with the thermal environment. Dissatisfaction may be caused by thermal discomfort of the body as a whole as expressed with the PMV and PPD indices, or it may be caused by unwanted cooling (or heating) of a particular part of the body. Due to individual differences, it is impossible to specify a thermal environment that will satisfy everybody. There will always be a percentage of dissatisfied occupants, but it is possible to specify an environment predicted to be acceptable by a certain percentage of the occupants.

The best way to ensure controlled development of the brief, and of the cost plans which necessarily accompany it, is to set up a system of data sheets which define, in increasing detail as the project develops, the spatial, functional and servicing requirements of each component part of the project. A well-resourced technical client may wish to do this himself. More commonly, it is a task which should be entrusted to the design team. The text summarises the activities and outcome of the Organic HACCP project (www.organichaccp.org) that was completed in 2005, how a database of critical control points (CCPs) was developed for some representative supply chains and how this was used to define a set of recommendations that were then developed into leaflets with advice to producers, processors, retailers or consumers, respectively. The chapter will thus explain how companies at every step of the production chain can utilise the concepts to improve customer satisfaction in a cost-effective manner. Finally, it will describe an example of implementation in a group of collaborating companies and suggest where additional activities are needed in order to develop the concept further. 

In some instances, an S-shaped relationship that captures both asymmetry and decreasing returns is proposed for the impact of attribute performance on customer satisfaction. Decreasing returns imply that the impact of changes in attribute performance on customer satisfaction is more consequential at the middle of the scale than at the extremes. And, because the impact of a change in performance at the lower end of the performance scale is thought to be more consequential than the same change at the upper end of the performance scale, an asymmetry exists. Anderson and Mittal (2000) define attributes that exhibit this relationship as satisfaction maintaining. In competitive industries, these attributes are the table stakes or the minimum a firm needs to provide to be even considered as a viable option by customers. 

R.J, Reynolds (RJR) maintained a nicotine optimization program, the goals of which were to define the optimum nicotine level in cigarette smoke required to maximize smoker satisfaction as well as a minimum or threshold value of nicotine required for satisfaction (Piehl 1978 R.J, Reynolds 1989),...

Furthermore, the satisfaction of a desire may involve scarce resources, starting with the time, energy and attention of the person concerned. The same is true of extinguishing a desire, as is proved by introspection, or by the fact that the bhikkhus who undertake this task proceed so slowly and almost never arrive at their final goal. Fibers (qv) have been defined by the Textile Institute as units of matter characterized by flexibility, fineness, and a high ratio of length to thickness (3). For use in textile applications, fibers should have adequate temperature stability, strength, and extensibility. Other important qualities include cohesiveness or spinability and uniformity. There are also several secondary characteristics that improve customer satisfaction and therefore may be desirable. These include cross-sectional shape, specific gravity or density, moisture regain, resiliency, luster, elastic recovery, and resistance to chemicals, environmental conditions, and biological organisms. 

Functional properties, as considered from the point of view of the food processor, are those properties which impart desired physical characteristics to the products. For example, foam stability would be an important functional property to a producer of whipped toppings. From the perspective of the consumer, this functional property may contribute to satisfaction and lead to repeat purchases. Increasingly, however, the consumer is concerned with the nutritional impact of his purchases. Thus, the food industry will be pressured to expand its concept of functional properties to include nutritional considerations. Martinez (1) has recently suggested that functionality be defined as "the set of properties that contributes to the desired color, flavor, texture, and nutritive value of a product". In order to assess the nutritive value of a product, one must evaluate more than the presence of the nutrients one must evaluate nutrient bioavailability.
