RADWASS has been organized in a hierarchical structure of four levels of safety documents. The top-level publication is a document of safety fundamentals which provides the basic safety objectives and fundamental principles to be followed in national waste management programmes. The lower levels include safety standards, safety guides, and safety practice documents. The series has been structured in a logical and clear manner to reflect the systems approach to waste management. [Pg.331]

True or false As low as is reasonably achievable (ALARA) with respect to individual exposure to ionizing radiation is a fundamental principle of current radiation safety practice. [Pg.335]

Those responsible for the project engineering of such a plant, who often have access to less than 50 % of the information on the chemistry to be performed later due to the reasons mentioned, can come up with only one recommendation if they seriously wish to meet the demand for a design for the worst possible case leave the lid off the reactor. The lack of practicability of this proposal, not least due to the violation of other process safety engineering principles, does not need to be elaborated any further. [Pg.269]

You ll find presentation material here for classroom use or for self-instruction. There are also workshop problems, and there s our Jacobs Sverdrup System Safety Scrapbook of ideas on the principles of system safety practice. You ll also find four bibliographies of texts pertinent to this field, as well as a System Safety and Risk Management Guide for Engineering Educators. All of these materials undergo revisions from time to time, so revisit the site often to see new and important items. [Pg.336]

No safety management principle is more applicable to safety culture change than the principle of application. The more the safety culture is affected by the safety system interactions, the more it will be understood, accepted, and practiced. [Pg.61]

The fact that TMI didn t result in a public health catastrophe has to be ascribed to the Defence in Depth principle systematically adopted as Western safety practice. The concept provides multiple redundant and diverse barriers against radioactive releases, well beyond what could be thought strictly necessary. TMI showed that this principle offers protection against the unforeseen and the unknown possible events. [Pg.22]

The ALARP (As low as Reasonably Practicable) principle is the basis of the UK Safety Case Regulations, and requires every employer to adopt safety measures unless the cost is grossly disproportionate to the risk reduction . [Pg.378]

The next process variable to be controlled is film thickness (gauge). Either on-line or off-line measurements allow us to monitor film gauge. On-line devices usually employ a radiation source, such as a gamma backscatter system. These devices measure thickness by emitting radiation that reflects back to the sensor from both the near and far surfaces of the film. They can be mounted to measure a fixed location on the bubble or on a carriage to traverse around the bubble (Fig. 3.21). Also, a unit traversing back and forth across the flattened web can be used, but this measures two-layer thickness. Off-line devices typically operate on a capacitance principle, so they don t require the safety practices employed with radiation sources. [Pg.85]

Open sources of radiation refer to solids or solutions that contain radioisotopes. As with any other chemical, the chance for spillage or contamination is always present. Combining the principles of using time, distance, and shielding with other basic laboratory safety practices can effectively prevent exposures from radioisotopes. [Pg.458]

Frequent, effective and healthy communications must be made in a marmer that each individual feels empowered to act with authority to ensure achievement of process safety practices and principles. There must be clear delegation of, accoimtability established and resources available so that individuals can successfully fulfill their re-sponsibihties [11]. [Pg.435]

The implementation of safety standards for nuclear installations, including those of the IAEA s Nuclear Safety Standards (NUSS) programme, has indicated a need for a separate publication to present the fundamental principles of nuclear safety. The Safety Series publications form a hierarchy of four levels with Safety Fundamentals at the highest level. Other levels correspond to Safety Standards, Safety Guides and Safety Practices. This Safety Fundamentals publication is intended not only for those people who are interested in the more detailed Safety Standards and Safety Guides, but also for those technical and political decision makers who may need a concise explanation of the fundamental safety principles. [Pg.11]

Sustainable plastic bottles can be made with biobased or recycled plastics, produced without regulated heavy metals or toxins, and made with clean manufacturing principles, and fair employment and safety practices. LCA can be used to provide a sustainable plastic bottle. The LCA process can include key elements of LCA, which features consistent functional units, energy, GHGs, waste, and pollution that include eutrophication, acidification, toxic chemical release, and end-of-life. [Pg.177]

Behaviors prior to and dnring the Fukushima Daiichi event revealed the need to strengthen several aspects of nuclear safety culture. It would be beneficial for all nnclear operating organizations to examine their own practices and behaviors in light of this event and use case studies or other approaches to heighten awareness of safety culture principles and attributes. [Pg.22]

The ALARP (as low as reasonably practicable) principle involves deciding if the cost and time of any proposed risk reduction is, or is not, grossly disproportionate to the safety benefit gained. [Pg.220]
