Safety performance costs

The selection of a contractor has to be a balanced judgement with a number of factors taken into account. Fortunately, a contractor who works well and meets the client s requirements in terms of the quality and timeliness of the work is likely also to have a better than average health and safety performance. Cost, of course, will have to be part of the judgement but may not provide any indication of which contractor is likely to give the best performance in health and safety terms. In deciding which contractor should be chosen for a task, the following should be considered ... [Pg.41]

A failure modes and effects analysis is a systematic analytical technique for identifying potential failures in a design or a process, assessing the probability of occurrence and likely effect, and determining the measures needed to eliminate, contain, or control the effects. Action taken on the basis of an FMEA will improve safety, performance, reliability, maintainability and reduce costs. The outputs are essential to balanced and effective quality plans for both development and production as it will help focus the controls upon those products, processes, and characteristics that are at risk. It is not the intention here to give a full appreciation of the FMEA technique and readers are advised to consult other texts. [Pg.465]

Frame PSM in terms of their interests. People pay more attention to information that is relevant to them, than to items of general or academic interest. For example, "PSM provides a cost-effective means of improving our company s safety performance" addresses two senior executive concerns corporate earnings and exposure to liability. The discussion is framed in terms of the listener s interest it also focuses on results. [Pg.11]

The ultimate goal of PSM is improved safety performance. In addition, over and above the mandatory compliance with OSHA standards, there are potentially significant business benefits to implementing PSM, including improved efficiency, cost savings, and competitive advantages. [Pg.20]

Perhaps, even more important, is the stagnation in our safety and environmental performance in the last five years. Until five years ago, we had seen dramatic year on year improvement in every aspect of safety and environmental performance. This has slowed down in all areas and ceased altogether in occupational safety. I expect that these changes will invigorate all our programs. Our current safety and environmental performance costs us at least 30 million each year in avoidable costs such as capital damage and clean-up costs. If we could put a dollar value on injuries to our work-force, the savings would likely be ten times this amount. [Pg.42]

The laboratory operator is offered many choices in selecting utility outlets. A careful study will need to be made in order to select those that give the best combination of performance, durability, safety, and cost for service in a particular laboratory. [Pg.94]

As of this writing, there is only one commercial manufacturer of dynamite in the United States, Dyno Nobel (Carthage, MO). For most commercial purposes, dynamites have now been replaced by AN-based formulations, which offer a better combination of performance, safety, and cost. [Pg.18]

In conclusion, it is obvious that formulation research is of great importance and it will continue as long as improvements in performance, safety and cost are desired. [Pg.175]

Union Carbide showed the possibility of developing D-size hydrogen-nickel batteries with satisfactory performance. However, safety and cost considerations have restricted the applications of such units and the discovery of hydrogen storage alloys led to the development of the nickel-metal hydride secondary cell which was described in Chapter 6. [Pg.299]

Comparisons were made relative to safety performance and cost with other expl materials. It was concluded that the most favorable features of Teledet are its good safety characteristics, good chemical and thermal stability (for a slurry expl), easy emplacement, and the ability to propagate in small diameters. The features that detract are the metal acceleration capacity which is about 75% that of TNT, the separation of ingredients in low-viscosity Teledet, and the higher cost, relative to other slurry expls Re/s I) C.D. Safety performance also can affect other elements in periodic job performance ratings. Corporate insurance policies in the chemical industry typically include large self-insurance factors— deductibles —which are in the millions of dollars. Any losses which fall within this self-insurance limit are charged to the unit involved. This affects the unit s costs and profitability, also major factors in evaluating the manager s job performance. [Pg.273]

The preliminary principles forged at this multidisciplinary conference are intended for engineers to use as a guidance in the design or redesign of products and processes within the constraints dictated by business, government, and society such as cost, safety, performance, and environmental impact. [Pg.216]

Success stories can show that improved process safety can contribute to increased productivity, cost efficiencies, and reliability. Using metrics to demonstrate the nexus between process safety performance and other organizational objectives only serves to reinforce individual and organizational commitments to process safety. A good process safety system, including appropriate metrics, can help prevent events such as unplanned shutdowns. Decreasing the number of unplanned shutdowns due to equipment failures or processing aberrations are examples of where process safety and other operational activities are linked. Unplanned shutdowns create extra cost and production problems as well as increase the probability of a process safety incident. [Pg.132]

When comparing antiemetic agents for the development of a policy for CIE prevention, CEA can be employed. Many of these agents differ with respect to effectiveness, safety, and cost. By performing a thorough CEA, these variables can be reduced to a single number (cost-effectiveness ratio), which will allow for a meaningful comparison. The treatment alternative with a better cost-effectiveness ratio than the others (i.e., lower cost per unit of outcome) would be selected and promoted for use. [Pg.12]

Formulating an LDLD is both a science and an art. It requires a good balance between product performance, aesthetics, safety, and cost. From the consumer point of view, the important attributes for a hand dishwashing liquid are listed in Table 7.9. Liquid dishwashing detergents are formulated to deliver against these consumer-relevant attributes. [Pg.201]

Suitable pipe materials for ground coupled heat pumps may already exist. However, no material standards, recommended design practices. Installation procedures or safety precautions have been developed. The operating characteristics of these systems are now known well enough for these standards to be developed. This will facilitate the optimizations of the performance, cost and reliability of these systems. [Pg.213]

This includes a brief description of design parameters and their functions for a given product or family of products. The description may also include any special test conditions or requirements. In addition, specific customer requirements that must be met for each performance characteristic, including reliability, performance, maintainability, producibility, testability, safety, and cost objectives. [Pg.1998]

Harshbarger, D., Rose, T. (1991). New possibilities in safety performance and the control of workers compensation costs. Journal of Occupational Rehabilitation, 1, 133-143. [Pg.88]

Our excellent safety performance over the past seven years has been a key factor in reducing our insurance cost. Our low EMR [Experience Modification Rate], incidents rates, and SHARP Management System have impressed our customers and, in many cases, was a key factor in selecting Parsons to perform their project. [Pg.194]
