Safety organization

Orienting the health and safety organization toward teamwork. 

A professional safety organization for people who manage, supendse and consult on safety, health, and environmental issues in industiy, insurance, government and education. 

Once a chemical or material is positively defined, that is it is fuUy characterized and determined to be preferable as used with respect to human and environmental health and safety, organizations may establish a platform from which to develop products and processes. We provide as examples of positively defining chemicals and chemical products the CleanGredients database and the Coastwide Laboratories Sustainable Earth Green Chemistry (SEGC) 114 Standard for green chemical product development. 

An international nuclear safety organization could be set up to adopt world safety standards, and approve standardized plant designs which could be built efficiently in volume around the world. This international organization, or additional ones, could approve, or provide, standard operator and maintenance training and like the IAEA could provide periodic inspections to assure that safety standards are being maintained, and that nuclear materials were not being illegally diverted. Indeed, perhaps the IAEA could be expanded to meet these requirements. 

Good laboratory practice (or good scientific practice) is the term used to describe how chemists, and indeed other scientists, should go about their day-to-day work. It covers a variety of characteristics, such as tidiness, cleanliness, care, thoughtfulness, safety, organization and self-discipline. A chemist who has these qualities and uses them is more likely to get the correct results, and get them first time, than someone who does not have them. 

Such success stories may come from within the organization or from external sources including other companies and even other industries. Professional and trade associations, safety organizations, and some customers or suppliers as well as other business publications and sources can be sources for such information. Many of the same organizations hold meetings that discuss lessons learned (see Section 9.2.2). An organization may want to engage the corporate communications and/or public affairs functions to look for opportunities to publicize the company s successes within and outside the firm as well as look for examples outside of process safety successes. 

For example, in Germany the BSE crisis proved to be a catalytic event. The public suddenly realised that agricultural policy spends a lot of money without supplying the goods demanded by the general public, such as animal welfare or food safety. Organic farming seems to come off well in this respect - as we have shown in a previous section. 

Most countries have one or more suppliers of radiochemicals. To locate suppliers, the simplest way is often to contact the nearest nuclear c ter, as it may be a producer of radionuclides, the national radiation safety organization, or the annual Byers Guide of common nuclear journals. Product catalogs list the type of radioactive sources and compounds available, purity of the products, maximum and specific activities, radiation decay characteristics, accuracy of standards, labeling position, etc.
