Maintenance and training

The provision of standard operating procedures (SOPs) is an important factor underpinning GILSP and ensuring that Good Occupational Safety and Health is achieved. In many cases, a high number of SOPs may be required to cover many of the aspects of the bioprocess operation. 

Operability studies can also be useful, particularly when new or modified processes are being implemented. The Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP) is a system widely used in the chemical industry to systematically explore hazards which may arise from operating process plant and to implement actions to deal with the hazardous consequences. 

The IBP have tested a modified form of HAZOP for contained use biotechnology operations. We found that we could systematically address the interrelated issues of equipment mechanical design, operation, monitoring, maintenance, and training. Modifications to SOPs and/or equipment were identified.

Procedures should be developed for the operation and maintenance of pollution control and monitoring equipment and should include preventative maintenance and training programmes. 

Some significantly good payback times (1-7 years) have been achieved [14,17,133], mainly with simple and cheap dryers.
