Many companies are quite wiiiing to share information on their PSM programs with other firms. CCPS and industry associations provide good places for networking to make the initial contacts that begin this. Attending process safety conferences is a good way to meet people who share your interest in PSM. [Pg.46]

Even if an ordinary oil industry worker seldom or never meets PSA representatives during a work year offshore, the contact between PSA s employees and union and health and safety representatives is tight. The Labour Inspection Authority, union representatives, platform chiefs and others active in safety work regularly meet PSA representatives in safety conferences and different arenas of tripartite cooperation onshore. This is very different from the U.S. continental shelf, where regulatory representatives are very visible on installations but seldom or never meet elected representatives of oil industry workers. [Pg.400]

Regularly at safety conferences and in the work of committees drafting safety standards, controversy develops over the level of risk that is acceptable. This chapter presents a thought-provoking review of the levels of risk acceptable in various enterprises (space travel, auto racing, various manufacturing and business entities) and for product safety. It also provides a practical, useable framework for safety practitioners to use in determining acceptable risk levels. [Pg.5]

Dr. Steven Simon explored the differences in the two schools of thought in a speech he gave at a behavioral safety conference held by the American Society of Safety Engineers in February 1998. Simon indicated that there are two approaches in the behavior-based safety field. One takes a macro approach—the view that operation improvement is accomplished through a culture change. The other takes a micro approach and assumes that such improvement can occur by changing the behavior of hourly workers. [Pg.51]

This sounds ridiculous yet, in many companies, it is happening. BBS is being implemented in some form in 31 percent of companies where Occupational Hazards readers are employed. It is popular it is discussed in every safety conference today. Most BBS programs are primarily programs of peer observation and intervention. Hourly workers are trained and become trainers. Trainers train hourly workers to be observers. [Pg.426]

Once the safety department had settled down, a selection process based on merit was started, and the two successful candidates were sent to attend the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Professional Development Conference (PDC) in the United States. This was the first time safety staff had ever attended an international safety conference. Other safety staff members were elected to attend safety courses in Dubai, also a first for safety. The department was renamed from plant protection (security) to safety, health, and environment and was later moved to new premises. One of the resident safety officers was finally appointed as a safety supervisor on the same grade as a superintendent after his promotion had been overlooked for the last 20 years. [Pg.189]

After reviewing certain self-development goals set for safety staff, the two successful candidates were sent to the American Society of Safety Engineers safety conference in the United States. [Pg.193]

After spending 2 years in Hawaii at the Gemini Observatory he retired back to South Africa. He consults to organizations in the United States and is often a keynote speaker at international safety conferences. [Pg.240]

Safety professionals should be aware that there are three (3) predominate theories under which discrimination can take form. The first theory is that of Disparate Treatment. Under the Disparate Treatment theory, the discrimination takes the form of intentionally treating individuals differently due to their race, sex, or other protected classification or characteristic. For example, the disparate treatment theory would apply where an employer denies a job to an individual because the individual is of a specific race or the safety professional only permits the male members of the safety team to travel to the safety conference. [Pg.4]
