In addition to mating-disruption pheromones, there are a number of naturally occurring, nonpheromonal attractants and repellents. REPELLENT. 1. A substance that causes and insect of animal to turn away from it or reject it as food. Repellents may be in the form of gases (olfactory), liquids, or solids (gustatory). Standard repellents for mosquitos, ticks, etc., arc dtronella oil, dimethyl phthalatc, w-butylmcsityl oxide oxalate, DEET, and 2-ethyl hexanediol-1,3. Actidione is the most effective rodent repellent, but is too toxic and too costly to use. Copper naphthenate and lime/sulfnr mixtures protect vegetation against rabbits and deer. Trisubstituted organotins are useful biocides in agriculture and industry. They function as fungicides, bactericides, antihelminthics, and rodent repellents (WHO 1980). Tributyltins are used as antifoulants in marine paints but are restricted by the Organotin Antifouling Paints Control Act (June 16, 1988) which limits the type of vessel on which these paints can be used and sets acceptable release limits (U.S. Bureau of Mines 1989). Bis(tributyltin)oxide is used as a preservative for wood products, leather, ropes, fabrics, and paper.

Uses Ziram is an odorless powder at room temperature. Ziram is grouped under class III and GUP by the USEPA. Ziram is slightly to moderately toxic. Triorganotin compounds have also been used experimentally in controlled-release formulations to control the infective snail vector in the debilitating tropical disease schistosomiasis (bilharzia) and to control mosquitoes in stagnant ponds (103). As yet, the large-scale use of such methods has little support in the host third world countries where these problems are most severe. Tributyltin chloride has been used to confer rodent-repellent properties on wire and cable coatings (104).
