Some common uses are in electrical wiring and components of electronic equipment, roofing, and pipes and plumbing and in the manufacturing of alloys such as brass, bronze, Monel metal, electroplating, jewelry, cooking utensils, insecticides, marine paints, cosmetics, and wood preservatives. [Pg.113]

Like the natural iron oxide pigments, the synthetics are used for colouring concrete, bitumen, asphalt, tiles, bricks, ceramics and glass. They are also used extensively in house and marine paints. Because the shapes of the particles can be accurately controlled and the particle size distribution is narrow, synthetic iron oxides have a greater tinting strength than the natural ones and so, are chosen where paint colour is important, i. e., for top coats. Copper(l) cyanide is used in copper plating of nickel, chromium, zinc alloys, steel, and other metals or alloys. Such copper plating imparts brightness, smoothness, hardness, and strength. The cyanide solution employed for copper electroplating consists of copper cyanide and sodium cyanide. The observation that imposex occurred primarily in marinas suggested causality with some contaminant originating from such facilities. Field experiments demonstrated that neogastropods transferred from pristine sites to marinas often developed imposex.
