Tide V of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 covers federally approved state operating permits for manufacturing faciUties. One requirement of this regulation is that manufacturers must report emissions information of identified ha2ardous air pollutants specific to thein operation from a list of 189 named in the Clean Air Act Amendments. Rubber and tine manufacturers had to meet this requirement by the end of 1995. The Rubber Manufacturers Association has begun an industrywide project to develop accurate and reliable emissions data to aid manufacturers to comply with these requinements (44). [Pg.500]

In general, rubber manufacturers balance thiol reactivity and odor. The stmcture of the thiol plays a significant role in its abiUty to be transported within the polymer matrix, particularly in emulsion polymerizations, ie, mixed water—monomer emulsion. World production of I2 in 1992 approached 15 000 tonnes, the dominant producers being Japan 41%, Chile 40%, USA 10% and the former Soviet Union 9%. Crude iodine is packed in double polythene-lined fibre drums of 10-50-kg capacity. Resublimed iodine is transported in lined fibre drums (11.3 kg) or in bottles containing 0.11, 0.45 or 2.26 kg. The price of I2 has traditionally fluctuated wildly. Thus, because of acute over-supply in 1990 the price for I2 peaked at 22/kg in 1988, falling to 12/kg in 1990 and 9.50/kg in 1992. Unlike CI2 and Br2, iodine has no predominant commercial outlet. About 50% is incorporated into a wide variety of organic compounds and about 15% each is accounted for as resublimed iodine, KI, and other inorganics. Durihg recent years a considerable amount of re-.search has been undertaken to understand what in the makeup of a polymer affects the processability. In the late 1980s, the Rubber Manufacturers Association in the United States undertook a research project with the Department of Polymer Engineering at the University of Akron to evaluate the laboratory equipment available using specially made butadiene-acrylonitrile polymers with different acrylonitrile levels, molecular weights, and molecular weight distributions. The results from the study confirmed that, from the processing variables viewpoint, the major factors are frequency (shear rate), temperature (temperature), and deformation (strain). [Pg.452]

The two-roll mill represents the earliest form of rubber processing machine, used by the rubber manufacturer being developed from the masticator of Hancock.
