This Handbook teaches research-based psychology related to occupahonal safety. Thus, by reading this text you will improve your common sense about the psychology of safety. At this point, I hope you are open to questioning the validity of good-sounding statements that are not supported by sound research. [Pg.16]

These and other common safety beliefs will be refuted in this book, with reference to scientific knowledge obtained from systematic research. Sometimes, case studies will illustrate the practicality and benefits of a particular principle or procedure, but the validity of the information was not founded on case studies alone. HPLC is an important analytical technique in a forensic science laboratory since it can be employed for the analysis of an extensive range of analytes in many varied and complex matrices. The potential of this technique is due to its versatility and through the exploitation of separation and detection methods the desired selectivity and/or sensitivity can be achieved only through the development of new techniques or the modification of existing chromatographic techniques. Future applications will still rely on research work performed in forensic laboratories. One final point should be made. The observation of significant solvent effects on kp in homopolymerization and on reactivity ratios in copolymerization (Section 8.3.1) calls into question the methods for reactivity ratio measurement which rely on evaluation of the polymer composition for various monomer feed ratios (Section 7.3.2). If solvent effects arc significant, it would seem to follow that reactivity ratios in bulk copolymerization should be a function of the feed composition.138 Moreover, since the reaction medium alters with conversion, the reactivity ratios may also vary with conversion. Thus the two most common sources of data used in reactivity ratio determination (i.e. low conversion composition measurements and composition conversion measurements) are potentially flawed. A corollary of this statement also provides one explanation for any failure of reactivity ratios to predict copolymer composition at high conversion.
