Monte Carlo search methods are stochastic techniques based on the use of random numbers and probability statistics to sample conformational space. The name Monte Carlo was originally coined by Metropolis and Ulam [4] during the Manhattan Project of World War II because of the similarity of this simulation technique to games of chance. When enrichment episodes occur in the real world, but not in the laboratory under federal certification tests, real-world emissions are significantly higher than predicted. Further complicating emissions prediction is that aggressive driver behavior and complex traffic flow characteristics play a large role in enrichment occurrence. Current vehicle activity simulation models can predict average speeds and traffic volumes very well, but poorly predict the hard-accel-eration events that lead to enrichment.

Using the example of a transportation maintenance facility, Figure 7.7 shows that a counter-clockwise rotation of the traffic flow could achieve minimum crossing and give a graduation of decreasing traffic density in the counter-clockwise direction as vehicles are diverted off the main stream (Figure 7.8). 

These include the canteen, toilets, workers rest rooms, access routes and the car parks. Hygiene, traffic density, traffic flow and sizing need to be addressed and have been discussed in the section on the sizing model. 

We now illustrate another analytical method that uses known methods of physics to treat a concrete flow problem .e., traffic flow.
