Knowledge of internal molecular motions became a serious quest with Boyle and Newton, at the very dawn of modem natural science. Flowever, real progress only became possible with the advent of quantum theory in the 20th century. The study of internal molecular motion for most of the century was concerned primarily with molecules near their equilibrium configuration on the PES. This gave an enonnous amount of inunensely valuable infonuation, especially on the stmctural properties of molecules. 

The many approaches to the challenging timestep problem in biomolecular dynamics have achieved success with similar final schemes. However, the individual routes taken to produce these methods — via implicit integration, harmonic approximation, other separating frameworks, and/or force splitting into frequency classes — have been quite different. Each path has encountered different problems along the way which only increased our understanding of the numerical, computational, and accuracy issues involved. Sir Joseph Swan, as a result of his quest for carbon fiber for lamp filaments (2), learned how to denitrate nitrocellulose using ammonium sulfide. In 1885 he exhibited the first textiles made from this new artificial sHk, but with carbon fiber being his main theme he failed to foUow up on the textile possibihties. Meanwhile Count Hilaire de Chardoimet (3) was researching the nitrocellulose route and had perfected his first fibers and textiles in time for the Paris Exhibition in 1889. There he got the necessary financial backing for the first Chardoimet silk factory in Besancon in 1890. His process involved treating mulberry leaves with nitric and sulfuric acids to form cellulose nitrate which could be dissolved in ether and alcohol. This collodion solution could be extmded through holes in a spinneret into warm air where solvent evaporation led to the formation of soHd cellulose nitrate filaments.

As the nonwoven fabrics industry has matured and technology has become pubHcly available, emphasis in the various sectors of the industry has changed. In the 1990s, some portions of the nonwovens industry are technology driven, whereas others are market driven. A number of firms are proprietary technology based, and others are turn-key plant operations. Some corporations are commodity roU-goods producers, and others are more oriented to niche market, high value-added products. Many nonwoven produces continue the quest for new markets and more opportunities to compete with textiles, paper, and plastics.

QRA results can guide decision makers in their quest for continuous improvement in risk reduction, but zero risk is an unattainable goal. Any activity involves some risk. Even if it were hypothetically possible to eliminate the risk of every accident scenario in a QRA, some risk would still remain because no QRA examines every possible accident scenario. At best a QRA identifies the dominant contributors to risk from the system as it existed at the time of the analysis. Once those are eliminated, other minor risk contributors (including many that were left out of the original QRA because they were negligible contributors, as well as new risks introduced by changes to eliminate the original risks) remain as the new dominant risk contributors. 

Against this backdrop, the quest for more efficient processes, more reliable equipment, downtime avoidance, and maintenance cost reductions is understandable. How are these pursuits structured Better yet, how should they be structured The answer is the real best-of-class, high profitability performers who are hard at work changing old ways of thinking. They are willing to reassess work processes and work procedures. Best-of-class companies also revisit the basics while, understandably, engaging in the search for new and advanced technologies. 

Improvement in business performance is essential for growth and profit, but the ISO/TS 16949 requirements are not concerned with your growth and profits they are concerned with product quality, and one definition of product quality that signals improvement potential is freedom from defects . Achieving quality become a quest to eliminate defects and in so doing reduces variation in the operational processes, but even when there are no defectives, there will still be variation. One might well question the need to reduce variation when there are no defectives but by reducing variation you will have fewer breakdowns, fewer errors, less space allocated to inventory, less waste, etc. in fact fewer problems and increased profit as a result.
