Quill was founded in April 1999 as an industrial consortium, with members from all sectors of the chemical industry. It is based on the well-proven industry/uni-versity cooperative research center (lUCRC) concept developed by the U.S. National Science Foundation and is only the second lUCRC in Europe. There were 17 founding industrial members of the Quill consortium, and the current membership includes (listed alphabetically) bp. Chevron, Cytec, DuPont, Eastman Chemicals, ICI, Invista, Merck, Novartis, Procter and Gamble, SACHEM, SASOL, Shell, Strata, and UOP. Research carried out between QUB and individual companies, or by QUILL itself, has generated more than 20 patent applications, many of which have now been published, from as diverse a range of industries as BNFL, BP Chemicals, Cytec, ICI, Quest International, and Uni-chema Chemie BV. In a recent report in Nature, the need for collaboration between government, industry, and academic institutions to form sustainable chemistry centers was stressed as vital in order to rethink traditional chemistry processes to be not only beneficial to the environment but also to make economic sense for industry. The commercial yeast invertase (Bioinvert ) was purchased from Quest International . Styrene-divinylbenzene bead derivatives having different granulometry (50-400 mesh) and different degrees of crosslinking (2-8%) were purchased from Sigma (St. Louis, MO). All other chemicals were of analytical grade. 

A European patent granted to Quest International Services BV involves use of pyridine derivatives as fragrance materials. 2-Alkyl-substituted pyridines are specifically mentioned, including all possible stereoisomers of 2-(2,4-dimethylcyclohexyl)pyridine 46, which is made from 2-vinylpyridine and 2-methyl-l,3-pentadiene via the Diels-Alder reaction <2006EP01562904>.

Close on the heels of IFF is the Unilever group, which developed in the field through acquisitions. After consolidating in 1983 its three perfume and flavor subsidiaries—PPL, Food Industries, and Bertrand Freres—to form PPF International, the group acquired a foothold in the U.S. market in 1984 with Norda. Three years later it merged PPF with Holland s Naarden, which was on the decline. Called Quest International (Unilever) the new company accounts for over 7 percent of the world market in its area.

Refined, bleached, and deodorized palm stearine was obtained from CanAmera Foods (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) lard and canola oil were purchased from a local supermarket. Tween 80 was supplied by Quest International (Lachine, Quebec, Canada). Free fatty acid content was determined [as percentage oleic acid (w/w)] by titration (12).
