Telecommunications Protocols

The telecommunications protocol includes one start bit, two data bits, one even parity bit, and one stop bit, for a total of 10 bits per character. Alternatively, one start bit, eight data bits, no parity, and one stop bit (10 bits /character) may be used. The start bit, part of most protocols, may not be discussed in the documentation. [Pg.458]

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU), located in Geneva, Switzerland and founded in 1965, is an international organization that supports developing international standards for networks on behalf of all countries. Return to Zero coding is a widely used telecommunications signalling protocol. It uses a spacer or empty E token, which is transmitted between every data value. For example the data sequence 0,1,1,0,1 would be transmitted as O.E.I.E.I.E.O.E.I.E. Two bits per value are needed. Data 0 is coded as 01, Data V as 10 and E as 00. In this way every signal involves a 1-bit change.
