Packet switching

During the early 1970s, the necessary telecommunications technology became available with packet switching. ARPANet, the first operational packet-switched digital communications network, was implemented by the U.S. Department of Defense. Commercial systems (eg. Telenet, TYMNET, and GENet) became available shortiy thereafter. [Pg.113]

Packet switching is one of the key attributes of the TCP/IP technology. The data stream belonging to a specific communication session is split into small data pieces, called packets. The packets are delivered independently at the target host. The separated packets of the same communication session may follow different routes to their destination. In contrast to line-switching communication technologies, in packet switched networks there is no need to set up connections between the communicating units before the start of the requested data transmission. A good example of line-switched technology is the traditional public phone service. In contrast to packet switching, line switching assumes a preliminary connection setup procedure being performed before a conversation starts. Packet-switched systems are very efficient for transmitting data traffic but require control layers in addition to the physical layer that creates the bit pipe. A media-access control (MAC) layer is required for data users to share the bit pipe. In packet switching, a complete data message is broken up into thousands of packets. Each packet, in addition to carrying the requisite intelligence, carries information regarding its importance and its destination. A selected packet is sent toward its destination and is received by the node at the end of this particular link and analyzed.
