Protective environments

Regulators may be used in gas blanketing systems to maintain a protective environment above anv liquid stored in a tank or vessel as the liquid is pumped out. When the temperature of the vessel is suddenly cooled, the regulator maintains the tank pressure and protects the waUs of the tank from possible collapse. Regulators are known for their fast dynamic response. The absence of time delay that often comes with more sophisticated control systems makes the regulator useful in applications requiring fast corrective action. [Pg.793]

Nonetheless, birds have higher metabolic rates than mammals of similar size. Most small mammals reduce energy costs by seeking protected environments birds spend much of their time exposed. Also, because fat is heavy, the need to fly restricts a bird s ability to store energy. Even with a high-protein diet, a bird must eat as much as 3(1 percent of its body... [Pg.184]

RNAse is an enzyme that catalyses the breakdown of RNA molecules into their component nucleotides. RNAses are extremely common in the modern world, resulting in very short life spans for any RNA that is not in a protected environment. [Pg.1094]

Cyclodextrins can solubilize hydrophobic molecules in aqueous media through complex formation (5-8). A nonpolar species prefers the protective environment of the CDx cavity to the hulk aqueous solvent. In addition, cyclodextrins create a degree of structural rigidity and molecular organization for the included species. As a result of these characteristics, these macrocycles are used in studies of fluorescence and phosphorescence enhancement (9-11), stereoselective catalysis (.12,13), and reverse-phase chromatographic separations of structurally similar molecules (14,15). These same complexing abilities make cyclodextrins useful in solvent extraction. [Pg.170]

Although chlorophyll and chlorophyllin colorants seem to be easily obtained, in practice their production as natural food colorants is rather difficult. The sensitivity of chlorophylls to certain enzymes, heat, and low pH, and their low tinctorial strength greatly limit their manufacture and application as food additives, principally when the pigments are isolated from the protective environment of the chloroplasts. The well-known instability of chlorophylls prompted extensive research for developing... [Pg.204]

Considering the low stability of the pigments, all manipulations should be carried out in a light-protected environment. Equipment and glassware should be covered with black cloth or aluminum foil low temperatures for evaporation in the rotary evaporator or evaporation of small volumes directly under N2 or Ar should be used. Acidic pH should be avoided. Solutions and extracts should be stored at low temperatures under inert atmosphere and all procedures should be carried out as quickly as possible. [Pg.430]

This geometry is undoubtedly imposed by the skeletal stabilizing unit. Other eight membered phosphorus(III)-nitrogen rings, (MePNMe)i, (9) and (PrNO G NP) (11) are crown shaped containing all chemically equivalent phosphorus atoms. In XI, because the phosphorus atoms are of two sets and one set is in a highly protected environment, the possibility of selective, "cavitand," coordination at phosphorus sites exists. [Pg.305]

In testing the possibility of proton transfer as a quenching mechanism of tyrosine in oligopeptide/polynucleotide complexes, Brun et a/.(102) compared the fluorescence emission spectra of the tyrosine and O-methyltyrosine tripeptides. They noted that, in the complex, the O-methyltyrosine tripeptide had a unique secondary emission near 410 nm. Whether this emission is related to that observed by Libertini and Small(94) is an important question. While one must consider the possibility that two tyrosine side chains could be converted to dityrosine, (96) which has a fluorescence at 400 nm, another intriguing possibility is ambient temperature tyrosine phosphorescence. This could happen if the tyrosine side chain is in a rigid, protective environment, very effectively shielded from collisions with quenchers, particularly oxygen. [Pg.25]

Hsp70 hands off the protein to another class of chaperones known as Hsp60 or simply chaperonins. Chaperonins create a protected environment sometimes known as an Anfinsen cage because it creates an enclosed environment in which the protein segments spontaneously fold, free from aggregating with other proteins and somewhat free from aqueous influences. These are large proteins that are somewhat cylindrical in shape. Chaperonins are composed of two major units, or stacked rings. [Pg.329]

Steric Effects. Careful examination of scale models of the cellodextrins reveals that when C6 is positioned in a manner approximating the structure in / -methylcellobioside, the methylene protons are so disposed that they contribute significantly to creation of a hydrophobic protective environment for the adjacent glycosidic linkage. If, however,... [Pg.72]

In the design of a static-control system, parameters such as capacitance of the personnel, maximum anticipated potential static buildup, and the time to discharge the personnel to safe levels should be known for the model. This is also true when designing static discharge systems for containers entering static protected environments. Such containers should be discharged to safe levels prior to entering the protected space. [Pg.183]
