A planned level of checking HCN, NH3, NO and particulate matter should be undertaken at prescribed efflux points throughout the plant [9], [Pg.446]

If particulate matter is determined in accordance with BS 3405, then the volume of gas sampled must be sufficient to exceed the initial weight of the filter material by 0.3%. A minimum of three test runs must be undertaken, each of 1 h minimum duration each test, comprising a minimum sample volume of 1 m. All surfaces leading to the filter medium must be washed three times with CH3COCH3 immediately after each test run. The mass collected from these surface washings added to the mass collected on the filter must be used to report the particulate emission. The filter medium must be capable of retaining 99.95% of particles 0.3pm. [Pg.446]

Nitrogen in the air can be oxidized to NO and NO2 by exposure, say, to a firing zone in a burner. In a combustion process, typically 97% of the emission is NO. Normally NO and NO2 are measured together by converting the NO to NO2 using ozone generated from an [Pg.446]

The reaction forms a characteristic luminescence due to an electronically excited NO2 molecule decaying to a lower energy state. The intensity of the luminescence is proportional to the concentration of NO. The light emission is detected by a photomultiplier tube, which generates a proportional electronic signal. [Pg.446]

To measure the NO (NO + NO2) concentration, the NO2 must be converted to NO with a molybdenum converter at 325°C, whereas higher temperature converters would also convert any NH3 to NO. The converted NO is reacted with O3 to give the NO reading. [Pg.446]

Waste products from a number of commercial processes can be used as cheap and readily available fillers for PCM. For example, lightweight structural materials may be obtained by filling various low-viscous resins with waste materials [4, 5]. Also by adding fillers to reprocessed polymers it is possible to improve their properties considerably and thus return them to service [6]. This method of waste utilization is not only economically feasible but also serves an ecological purpose, since it will help to protect the environment from contamination. The maximum percentage of the filler should in these cases be such as to assure reliable service of the article made from the PCM under specified conditions for a specified period of time. [Pg.3]

Scientists and engineers at the University of Exeter are investigating whether natural fibers tike hemp and sisal could be used to make sustainable and eco-friendly brake pads [39]. The technology of brake pads turned green with the replacement of asbestos by aramids (hke Kevlar of DuPont) in the 1980s. Kevlar is very expensive and eco-friendly alternatives like hemp, jute, sisal, nettle, and flax are much, much cheaper.
