Protection, definition

The paper presents the results from systematic comparisons of contrast and resolution obtained with different types of radiation sources on steel thicknesses from 5 to 40 mm. These results have been taken into account with the definitions of the European standard for radiographic inspection of weldments (EN 1435) that is approved since 1997. Conclusions from practical investigations on pipe line sites, in petrochcemical plants and in nuclear power stations will be discussed as well. Furthermore, the presentation will stipulate a variety of advantages obtained from the new source in terras of coUimation and radiation protection. [Pg.423]

The American Spice Trade Association (ASTA) (4) accepts spice as any dried plant product used primarily for seasoning purposes. This broad definition was designed so that items labeled only as spice could give adequate protection to proprietary formulas for spice mixtures. However, ASTA recommends that the dehydrated vegetables and the color spices be listed separately by name on all labels. ASTA also has recommended that the capsicums, no matter the species, be delisted as spices and labeled separately. [Pg.23]

In general, the dyes occur as glycosides, the most common sugar being glucose. Some flavones contain more than one sugar. Their role as dyes in the plant is not definitely known a common suggestion is that they protect the plant from harm fill uv radiation. [Pg.398]

Corrosion Resistance. The environment to which a plated part is to be exposed should be a part of any definition of corrosion resistance. Problems arise in testing a part in its intended environment in part because of the long time period required. In many plating processes, corrosion resistance is direcdy proportional to the plate thickness, so a specification on plate thickness is a much faster method of indirectiy measuring corrosion resistance. In specifying a corrosion resistance requirement for the production of plated goods, accelerated tests are used especially if plate thicknesses caimot be related to corrosion protection. [Pg.151]

As microprocessor-based controls displaced hardwired electronic and pneumatic controls, the impac t on plant safety has definitely been positive. When automated procedures replace manual procedures for routine operations, the probability of human errors leading to hazardous situations is lowered. The enhanced capability for presenting information to the process operators in a timely manner and in the most meaningful form increases the operator s awareness of the current conditions in the process. Process operators are expected to exercise due diligence in the supervision of the process, and timely recognition of an abnormal situation reduces the likelihood that the situation will progress to the hazardous state. Figure 8-88 depicts the layers of safety protection in a typical chemical jdant. [Pg.795]

If an adjustable T-R is connected as forced stray current drainage between pipeline and rails and its output voltage is fixed at a definite level, the protection current and the pipe/soil potential can undergo considerable fluctuation. [Pg.231]

Standard for gauging flammability. The most common systems for designating flammability are the Department of Transportation (DOT) definitions, the National Fire Protection Association s (NFPA) system, and the Environmental Protection Agency s (EPA) Resource Conservation and Recovery Act s (RCRA) definition of ignitable wastes, all of which use flashpoint in their schemes. The NFPA diamond, which comprises the backbone of the NFPA Hazard Signal System, uses a four-quadrant diamond to display the... [Pg.171]

This section provides an overview of important definitions and terminology that the Hazardous Materials Worker and Emergency Response Personnel should know. Emergency response at sites other than hazardous waste clean-up sites are emphasized. Under OSHA s 29 CFR1910.120 emergency response personnel (that will take some action to control the situation other than call for help) shall be trained to a competence to protect themselves and other employees in ... [Pg.1]

After the inherent hazards are reduced, layers of protection are frequently used to protect the receptors of the hazard—the public, the environment, workers, other processes, or the process itself (Figure 1.1). In the strictest sense, one could argue that the definition of inherently safer applies only to elimination or reduction of the hazard. In the broad sense, the strength of a layer of protection can be improved by features that are permanent and inseparable from that layer. Thus, layers of protection can be classified into three categories, listed in decreasing order of reliability passive, active, and procedural. A passive layer of protection can be described as inherently safer than an active... [Pg.2]

Local ventilation is used to diminish or, preferably, to prevent exposure to contaminants (including heat). This includes protection of persons, products, or animals from hazardous and/or nuisance contaminants. This task is not specific for local ventilation and different definitions exist. One is the following ... [Pg.809]
