Any soluble salt of propanoic acid and a strong base would be suitable. Acceptable answers include sodium propanoate or potassium propanoate. [Pg.105]

Food preservatives prevent spoilage of food due to microbial growth. The most commonly used preservatives include table salt, sugar, vegetable oils and sodium benzoate, CeHgCOONa. Sodium benzoate is used in limited quantities and is metabolised in the body. Salts of sorbic acid and propanoic acid are also used as preservatives. [Pg.173]

The PMR spectrum of disopyramide phosphate in deuterated water is shown in Figure 3.2 Shifts are reported in ppm downfield from the methyl signal of 3-trimethylsilyl propanoic acid-d. sodium salt which was used as an internal reference. Band assignments are summarized below. [Pg.188]

Treatment of 3-(l-benzyloxymethylcyclopropyl)propanoic acid with various mercury(II) salts such as nitrate, trifluoroacetate and perchlorate gave the lactones 25A and 25B in 35-86% yield after aqueous potassium bromide workup. A number of related cyclopropanecarboxylic esters were reacted in the same fashion to give bromomercurio-substituted lactones 26 and 27/28 from which the mercury was removed by reduction with sodium borohydride. ... [Pg.1976]

The sodium salt of 3-(((3-(2-(7-chloro-2-quinolinyl)ethenyl)phenyl)((3-dimethylamino)-3-oxo-propyl)thio)propanoic acid represents an unusual case of a hygroscopic drug substance, where the surface-active substance (in both crystalline and lyophilized forms) produced nonflowing, semisolid masses with exposure to increasing relative humidity [29]. The substance was shown to form first an amorphous material and then a mesomorphic phase, as the moisture sorption increased with exposure to relative humidity. [Pg.342]

There are 49 different formulations available in the United States, including 2,4-D salts (sodium, amine, alkylamine, and alkanolamine) and esters (propanoic acid, butanoic acid, and other alkoxy compounds). Concentrated fomiulations of 2,4-D esters are likely to contain petroleum solvents (identified on the first aicT statement on the pesticide label) while these are considered inert ingredients because they are not pesticides, they may have their own innate toxicity (see Toluene and Xylene, p 357 and Hydrocarbons, p 219). [Pg.164]

Scheme 9.100. A representation of the Kolbe electrolysis of the sodium salt of propanoic acid. The voltage for the electrolysis must be greater than that required for the reduction of water to hydroxide anion (OH") and hydrogen (H2) which occurs at the cathode. It is generally accepted that one electron is lost by the carboxylate anion at the anode to generate a carboxyl radical. The arrows shown on the carboxyl radical (with half-heads) are drawn to account for the apparent movement of one electron (in contrast to the usual cartoons showing two electron arrows) at a time to produce carbon dioxide (CO2) and the ethyl radical (CH3CH2 ).The latter dimerizes to butane or loses a hydrogen to a second radical, producing ethane and ethene. If triphenylmethyl chloride in ether is treated with sodium, a yellow colour is produced due to the presence of the anionic spiecies PhsC". Alternatively, if triphenylmethyl chloride is treated with silver perchlorate in a solvent such as THF, the triphenylmethyl cation is obtained. More conveniently, triphenylmethyl salts, PhsC X", can be obtained as orange-red crystalline solids from the action of the appropriate strong acid on triphenylcarbinol in ethanoic or propanoic anhydride solution. The perchlorate, fluoroborate and hexafluoro-phosphate salts are most commonly used for hydride ion abstraction from organic compounds (e.g. cycloheptatriene gives tropylium salts). The salts are rather easily hydrolysed to triphenylcarbinol. [Pg.406]

Salts of carboxylic acids are named in the same manner as are salts of inorganic acids Name the cation first and then the anion. Derive the name of the anion from the name of the carboxylic acid by dropping the suffix -ic acid and adding the suffix -ate. For example, the name of CH3CH2COO Na is sodium propanoate, and that of CH3(CH2)i4COO Na is sodium hexadecanoate (sodium palmitate). [Pg.465]
