Professionalism and Professional Development

While most recent graduates and those who are just beginning in the safety field aren t necessarily thinking about professionalism or their responsibilities as a safety professional, they should. At least they should be aware of what this safety profession entails and what they should be looking forward to. It is a joint publication of the Board of Certified Safety Professionals and the American Society of Safety Engineers Foundation. [Pg.329]

Such collaborations as represented in the project team have been described by Watts (1985) as important for the snccess of action research. He pointed ont that it is important for teachers to help each other by working collaboratively and that working with external colleagues supports them in their professional development. Our collaborative action research experience snpport these statements, namely it seems that the success of the investigation is to a great proportion due to the effective collaboration between the involved partners (the specific roles of partners are described earlier). [Pg.327]

Although there are major differences between national educational systems, some broad guidelines for successful science teacher professional development, culled from a review of recent curriculum development projects (Black Atkin, 1996, pp. 146-147 VanDen Akker, 1998, pp. 443 44) can be applied to a revised curricular provision in respect of the triplet relationship. The intention must be that the perception of new curricular provision by all teachers becomes congment with the intentions, content, and processes, of the formal curriculum. The guidelines suggest that... [Pg.341]

During and after programmes of professional development and curriculum evolution, any innovatory curriculum in the triplet relationship will be put into operation in classrooms. As the pmpose of teaching is to promote learning, what should be done in classrooms to maximise the desired learning Black Atkin (1996) have summarised the traditional assumptions about learning that have proved so unsatisfactory in the past. Information and knowledge develop on a continuum. Facts and information gained during the years of our formal education represent a thin slice on this continuum. Some of what we learn from the academic curriculum does remain viable unfortunately, much decays and becomes incomplete and inaccurate. Health care professionals and scientists must constantly renew and add to their skills, resources, and knowledge. This is fundamental to the profession. The Millis Commission in 1975 eloquently stated [26] ... [Pg.764]

The book explains how to solve coupled systems of ordinary differential equations of the kind that commonly arise in the quantitative description of the evolution of environmental properties. All of the computations that I shall describe can be performed on a personal computer, and all of the programs can be written in such familiar languages as BASIC, PASCAL, or FORTRAN. My goal is to teach the methods of computational simulation of environmental change, and so I do not favor the use of professionally developed black-box programs. [Pg.4]

However, many recent instruments are still not considered satisfactory, since professional developers in the field of high-throughput screening (HTS) want to use the full performance of the latest generation of robots and computers for automation. This results in new instrumental developments, like the possibility of reading not only 96, but 384 or even 1536 wells plates as well as DNA chips, very rapidly (in a minute or so) and repeatedly without any mechanical failures. Hence, in the eyes of company scientists developing new assays, many present-day instruments still correspond to an intermediate stage of development. For research laboratory scientists, on the other hand, the actual equipment offers excellent performance. [Pg.88]
