Instrument manufacturers all have detailed Web sites containing considerable information, not only on their equipment but on theory of operations, methods to maximize sensitivity, etc. The following are some government Web sites that can be searched for analytical methods http //www.epa.gov/pesticides/ (A number of links to US EPA analytical methods) http //www.nal.usda.gov/ http //npic. orst.edu/... 

It is difficult to provide cost comparison data for the SET process vs. alternative technologies because of the wide variability of the waste that must be remediated (soil, sludge, neat, oils, building materials, DNAPLs, etc.) and the nature of the contaminants. Each situation must be examined individually. What can be said is that SET is cost-competitive to incineration. Several good cost and effectiveness comparison references for these technologies are available from the Federal Government web sites (www.frtr. gov/costper.html and www.lanl.gov/projects/etcap/intro.html).

However, it is best to contact these agencies directly to be sure that one has all the relevant regulations. Nongovernmental organizations can be contacted directly for their rules. However, sources of information on the Internet are notoriously inaccurate and out of date. Unless it is an official government Web site (with the date of the latest update), beware.

OSHA- Occupational Health and Safety Administration The U.S. Occupational Health and Safety Administration, OSHA, is a federal government agency in the U.S. Department of Labor. OSHA s Web site is http //www.osha.gov/. The primary goals of OSHA are to save lives, prevent injuries, and protect the health of America s workers. OSHA employs over 2,000 inspectors to ensure job site safety. OSHA was created by the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act of 1970. While many see OSHA as an intrusive government agency intent on enforcing arcane rules, the fact is that OSHA saves lives. And if that is not enough...

ToxSeek is an NLM metasearch engine and clustering tool that enables the simultaneous searching of many different toxicology and environmental health information databases and web sites. This tool includes 59 databases including the TOXNET Search tool, as well as information sources from NLM, NIH, US Government, International and other sources. 

It is worthwhile searching the Internet for information on processes, equipment, products and physical properties. Many manufacturers and government departments maintain web sites. In particular, up-to-date information can be obtained on the health and environmental effects of products. 

IR is not typically used in common soil analytical procedures, although it has been used to investigate various soil components, the most common being humus and its various subcomponents (see Figure 14.6, top spectrum). It has also been used to identify soil clays, both crystalline and amorphous. Many IR spectra can be accessed on the Web via government laboratory sites. 

A number of Web sites are available to the public that often link to government sites. These can also point you in the direction of essential information. The following is a representative sample ...

NCI, part of the National Institutes of Health of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, is the federal government s principal agency for cancer research. NCI conducts, coordinates, and funds cancer research, training, health information dissemination, and other programs with respect to the cause, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of cancer. Zero Waste Alliance. The primary Web site for a coalition of universities, government, businesses, and other organizations working to develop and promote more efficient methods of dealing with wastes, http // www.zerowaste.org/. Accessed on September 1, 2006. 

James K. Classman (2005), a highly popular media pundit in some circles, including government, has sternly lectured European and Canadian policy makers thus on his own Web site Tech Central Station. He writes... 

Another approach is to take a guess at the organization s likely Web address. For example, the National Rifle Association is commonly known by the acronym NRA, so it is not a surprise that the organization s web site is at www.nra.org. (Note that noncommercial organization sites normally use the. mrg suffix, government agencies use. goal, educational institutions have. edu, and businesses use. com.) This technique can save time but does not always work. 

Regulations can be found at the web site for the relevant government agency (such as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, or BATF). 

Substantial amounts of information were drawn from presentations and papers provided by governments at various HCC meetings and international conferences over the last year. In many cases, these primary sources of information have been complemented by national reports and official governmental web sites. To the extent that the lEA has produced this report from the large pool of information provided primarily by HCC delegates, it relies on delegates for the accuracy and currency of the findings.

This International Resources Guide to Hazardous Chemicals also includes resources for chemical, environmental and industrial safety and hygiene information chemical industry associations, international government environmental agencies, United States environmental agencies, State agencies, Poison Control Centers, and a guide to Hotlines, Databases, and Useful Web sites. 

Databases are resources that contain environmental information in various fields. Databases may be available from government or educational institutions online or by inquiry, or may be available from commercial establishments on-line or CD-ROM. Some databases are essentially electronic entries to library catalogs and also provide access to full text articles and/or direct entry to publishers Web sites.
