Productivity number

Productivity number (PN) = product in mmol/dry wt of cells in kg xtime, h. 

These microbial methods have afforded excellent ee values and yields (40—52). However, owing to low, ie, 30—130, productivity numbers these processes have not yet been commercialized. 

In another case, a manufacturer of animal feedstuffs bought a starch additive from a Dutch company for incorporation in a milk substitute for calves. The Dutch company was out of stock, so it asked its UK affiliate company to supply the additive the Dutch company quoted the product number. Unfortunately, the UK affiliate used this number to describe a different additive, which was highly toxic. As a result, 68,000 calves were affected, and 4,600 died. Chemicals (and equipment) should be ordered by name and not just by a catalog number [6].

Names in small capital letters refer to the titles of individual preparations. A number in ordinary bold-face type denotes the volume. Now diere are a variety of odier ways to disconnect R in the retrosynthetic analysis. As long as each syndietic step is valid and the target can be produced by die proposed synthetic route, dien it is a collect solution. There can be many collect synthetic solutions for a given target and the best one may depend on factors other than those related strictly to die synthetic viability. Availability of starting materials, disposal of reaction by-products, number of steps, reagent sensitivity, expected yields, number of purifications, and the stereochemistry (among odiers) all contribute to die evaluation of a synthetic route.

The turnover number of a catalyst does not refer to the timescale of activity of that catalyst in a process. If the timescale of activity is taken into consideration, the productivity of the catalyst is recovered, expressed as a productivity number, PN, defined in Eq. (2.24). 

The base cost of a major equipment module is herein defined as the specific equipment item fabrication cost, such as that of a fractionation column, a field-erected furnace, a shell/tube heat exchanger, or process pump. Each of these items will be given a fabrication cost. A figure cost curve will be presented for each major equipment item, and will have cost of the item vs. a key process variable. These key process variables could be the furnace absorbed-heat duty, the shell/tube exchanger tube surface area, and the pump discharge pressure/gpm product number.
