The production of valuable carbonate products implies in practice the production of a valuable (precipitated) calcium carbonate. When producing these from calcium-containing waste materials, several process parameters have a direct influence on product quantity and quality. Many test results and product analyses have been reported, mainly for low-value feedstock materials such a cement waste, ashes and slags from iron- and steel production, and the carbonation processes are practically all based on aqueous systems operating at conditions up to 473 K, 20 MPa. [Pg.359]

From the customer point of view, the criteria for the design of a pressure vessel are determined in terms of costs (initial and subsequent) and output of a product (quantity and quality). While the initial cost of a pressure vessel is simply the price for purchasing and installation, subsequent costs are far more difficult to judge, because they depend on life time expectancy, reliability in service and effort for maintenance. [Pg.674]

Since mold pressures in RIM processes are usually below 100 psi (0.69 MPa), mold-clamp-pressure requirements can accordingly be low. Most RIM equipment is in the 25-100 ton range. Depending upon production quantity and quality requirements, molds for RIM may be made from aluminum-filled epoxy for low production, or from cast or machined aluminum or chrome-plated steel for longer runs. Molds must be heated to 120-160°F (49-71°C). Applications include automobile bumpers, radio and TV cabinets, furniture and business-machine housings (5). [Pg.318]

The issue of reproducibility of process parameters and of achievable product quantity and quality is of highest significance as this will ultimately be evaluated by the regulatory agencies. For Investigational New Drug applications (IND) and Process Licence Applications (PLA), rather specific requirements must be met with respect to the minimal number of product batches analyzed. For INDs, no less than three product runs are recommended. Shorter batch processes (5-7 days) have... [Pg.742]

There are common prerequisites for all industrial operations. Processes should be robust, reliable, and reproducible, and should meet the desired product quantity and quality requirement as demanded by the respective specifications. Since production operators often have limited scientific understanding, the process should be well defined, with minimum risk of technical failure. Therefore, most industrial processes will be controlled only by sensors that are relevant to operate the process in a reproducible manner. SOPs strictly define how the process should be operated. If manual intervention is required, it should be correctly defined and described in the SOP. While unplanned process interventions may be possible in a non-cGMP production, this is generally not acceptable in a GMP production, and will trigger a formal investigation under the supervision of quality assurance (QA). [Pg.21]

Simple conventional refining is based essentially on atmospheric distillation. The residue from the distillation constitutes heavy fuel, the quantity and qualities of which are mainly determined by the crude feedstock available without many ways to improve it. Manufacture of products like asphalt and lubricant bases requires supplementary operations, in particular separation operations and is possible only with a relatively narrow selection of crudes (crudes for lube oils, crudes for asphalts). The distillates are not normally directly usable processing must be done to improve them, either mild treatment such as hydrodesulfurization of middle distillates at low pressure, or deep treatment usually with partial conversion such as catalytic reforming. The conventional refinery thereby has rather limited flexibility and makes products the quality of which is closely linked to the nature of the crude oil used. [Pg.484]

More competitive refining industry. The run length of the early FCC units was very short the unit was shut down every year or so. The general approach at the time was to make the necessary repairs and replace the damaged internal components. Once the industry became more competitive, the drive was to increase the unit s run length, improve its reliability, and maximize the quantity and quality of desired products. [Pg.213]

Just like all herbal medicinal preparations, C. sativa should be standardized if extracts or whole plant material are to be used for medicinal purposes. Basic requirements are that all detectable constituents should be known, but also a sustainable quahty control system must be established to achieve the same quahty over all batches. For industrial use of cannabis, standardization could also be necessary to equahze the quality of the product. However, it must be stated that cultivation for this purposes is mostly performed outdoors. Outdoor growth makes standardization of the product difficult due to the environmental changes. For this reason the Dutch medicinal C. sativa is grown under strictly controllable conditions, and therefore indoors, by the company Bedrocan. At this company clones are used for breeding to maintain high standards for quantity and quality. After a strictly selective breeding procedure a plant fine has been estabhshed fulfilhng all criteria as a herb for medicinal use. [Pg.17]

Industrial chemical processes are determined by recipe and production route. The recipe is the specification of a sequence of processing steps for the transformation of raw materials into the desired product(s). Specifications include quantity and quality of raw materials, composition of feeds, sequence of additions to the reaction zone, rate of dosing, temperature-time dependencies, pressures, etc. The production route also includes the specification of equipment in which processing steps are performed. [Pg.461]

It is not difficult to write a number of chemical equations to represent physical, thermal, and chemical reactions taking place in a gasification vessel. In theory, gasification processes can be designed so that heat release (exothermic reactions) balances the heat required by endothermic reactions. But in practice many of the above physical, thermal, and chemical reactions may take place simultaneously, making a precise prediction of the quantity and quality or composition of product gas somewhat difficult. [Pg.18]

Studies incorporating cottonseed into many different foods have yielded acceptable products with improved protein quantity and quality. The presence of free gossypol and cyclopropenoid fatty acids (CPFA) potentially limits the use of cottonseed in human foods. [Pg.66]

More advanced applications of e-agriculture in farming exist in the use of sophisticated information and communication technologies such as satellite systems, Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and advanced computers and electronic systems to improve the quantity and quality of production (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations 2005). [Pg.43]

Significant in-plant control of both waste quantity and quality is possible, particularly in the soap manufacturing subcategories where maximum flows may be 100 times the minimum. Considerably less in-plant water conservation and recycle are possible in the detergent industry, where flows per unit of product are smaller. [Pg.343]

There is a tendency to reserve semisynthetic and totally synthetic methods for the introduction of bonds and residues that cannot be specified by the genetic code. The present chapter will concentrate on these aspects. However, semisynthesis can have a role to play even when building structures that are completely accessible to the genetic code. The first industrial challenge for the emerging technologies of total chemical synthesis, recombinant protein expression, and semisynthesis was the economic production of human insulin in pharmaceutically usable quantity and quality. The semisynthetic human insulin that was made from porcine insulin proved exceptionally convenient to produce, and was the first introduction to human insulin for very many patients. [Pg.81]

Extraction of 25 different binary mixtures of racemic acids (2-(4-isobutylphenyl)-propionic acid (1), and cis- and trans-chrysanthemic (2)), and various chiral bases with supercritical carbon dioxide permitted the conclusion that molecular chiral differentiation in a supercritical fluid is more efficient than in conventional solvents. In the majority of cases, however, complete separation could not be achieved. In five cases, remarkable partial resolutions were realized (30-75% ee) and resolution was possible on a preparative scale. The pair ds-chrysanthemic acid and (S)-(-i-)-2-(benzylamino)-1-butanol (3) was studied in detail. Pressure, temperature, and time, as well as the molar ratio of base and acid, had a marked influence on the quantity and quality of the products. Increasing pressure or decreasing temperature resulted in higher ee values. (-)-cw-Chrysanthemic acid in 99% ee was obtained from the raffinate in a single extraction step. Multiple extractions produced the (-i-)-cA-acid in 90% ee (see fig. 6.3) (Simandi et al., 1997). [Pg.147]

Similar to the challenges outlined in Chapter 2, the fact that most Chinese herbal medicines are complex mixtures of multiple active constituents further complicates the interpretation of study data, as well as extrapolation to other botanical products. Japanese Kampo (traditional Chinese herbal mixtures) prescriptions have been used for many years to treat different chronic conditions and are presently manufactured in Japan as drugs with standardized quantities and qualities of constituents. Homma et al. (51) evaluated the effect of three commonly used Japanese Kampo prescriptions, Sho-saiko-to (Xiao Chai Hu Tang), Saiboku-to, and Sairei-to, on prednisolone pharmacokinetics in humans. All three botanical prescriptions contain glycyrrhizin, a strong inhibitor of 11-p-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase. Chen et al. (52) had shown that glycyrrhizin decreased plasma clearance and increased AUC and concentration of prednisolone. [Pg.142]
