A product lifecycle ranges from resource extraction through manufacture to use and final waste disposal or processing. Under the current EU chemical risk assessment procedure, lifecycle thinking considers the risks at each stage of a substance s lifecycle, with the possible summation of multiple sources of exposures to a single substance [144], LCA that quantitatively evaluate the overall environmental and health impacts of processes, services or products can complement risk assessment as a useful decision-support tool for chemical risk management [183, 188, 536]. 

When we look at the factors that are identified in the interviews, we can see that the different factors, and hence, the related explicit uncertainty that is caused by them, can all be related to the different stages of the product lifecycle as, for example, defined by Bedford, Quigley and Walls (Bedford et al. 2006), i.e. concept and definition, design and development, manufacturing and installation, operation and maintenance. We see for example that the concept root-cause analysis (here, uncertainty is caused by this concept because we do not know the extent to which we are able to find the root-cause) can typically be related to the operation and maintenance phase. On the other hand, the concept supplier management (here, uncertainty is caused by the unknown level of quahty with which supplier management is applied) typically relates to the design and development phase. 

The NHS published standards DSCN 14 and DSCN18 require more formality and governance for safety management. The production of safety cases from suppliers or manufacturers and from the healthcare organisation (i.e. the Trust) is mandated. To support the safety cases a safety management lifecycle is defined. The intended dates for implementation were a challenge. In practice, there needed to be a process in place by the time of the implementation dates to derive safety cases. 

EIS is a design management process that takes into account the environmental impacts of a product dining its whole lifecycle, including the following phases procurement, manufacturing, distribution, use and end of life.
