This construction of E. coli KOll also serves as an example of the chromosomal integration of non-native genes, as opposed to their expression from plasmids. This chromosomal integration is motivated by a desire to improve strain stability and remove the dependence on antibiotics and inducers. A similar approach has been used to improve the production of tryptophan by E. coli [72] and xylanase production hy Bacillus sp. [73].
