Sulfonate Esters. These are marketed as efficient and easily processible plasticizers with good resistance to extraction. They are typically aryl esters of a to alkanesulfonic acid. [Pg.123]

It will become obvious that what is considered good design practice insofar as metals are concerned will not necessarily be good practice for processing plastics. It is advisable... [Pg.25]

A major difference between extrusion and IM is that the extruder processes plastics at a lower pressure and operates continuously. Its pressure usually ranges from 1.4 to 10.4 MPa (200 to 1,500 psi) and could go to 34.5 or 69 MPa (5,000 or possibly 10,000 psi). In IM, pressures go from 14 to 210 MPa (2,000 to 30,000 psi). However, the most important difference is that the IM melt is not continuous it experiences repeatable abrupt changes when the melt is forced into a mold cavity. With these significant differences, it is actually easier to theorize about the extrusion melt behavior as many more controls are required in IM. [Pg.474]

To produce and process plastics requires less energy than practically any other material (Fig. 9-8). In contrast, glass requires much more energy than any of the materials listed. [Pg.576]

Thermoplastic xylan derivatives have been prepared by in-hne modification with propylene oxide of the xylan present in the alkaline extract of barley husks [424,425]. Following peracetylation of the hydroxypropylated xylan in formamide solution yielded the water-insoluble acetoxypropyl xylan. The thermal properties of the derivative quahfy this material as a potential biodegradable and thermoplastic additive to melt-processed plastics. Xylan from oat spelts was oxidized to 2,3-dicarboxyhc derivatives in a two-step procedure using HI04/NaC102 as oxidants [426]. [Pg.52]

After processing, plastic components may undergo further treatments that may either improve or compromise their durability, including coating (e.g., decorative, antistatic), machining, annealing, adhesion and mechanical assembly. [Pg.24]

In the USA, there are approximately 13 000 companies specializing in processing plastics, about half the European figure. They employ about 600000 people, and have sales around 63 billion. A large number of enterprises, integrated into other industries, are not included in these statistics. [Pg.46]

To control compatibility and other properties of butadiene/acrylonitrile copolymers with PVC, there is an optimum acrylonitrile content of 37%. For practical handling, the nitrile rubber is treated on rolls at normal temperatures, and afterwards the mixture is rolled with PVC at elevated temperatures. The reverse process—plasticizing PVC first and mixing with nitrile rubber afterwards—is not so favorable because discoloring and decomposition may occur. This can be avoided by simultaneously applying the liquid plasticizers. Nitrile content in-... [Pg.97]

The form of the viscosity function is of practical relevance for processing plastic melts and other shear thinning materials. Shear rates can differ greatly depending on the process (Fig. 3.5). Sedimentation and trickle processes under shear force give shear rates of far less than 1 s . In the case of extrusion and in pipe flows, shear rates can reach several hundreds of reciprocal seconds, particularly if a portion of the volume is flowing over the tip of the screw (see Chapter 9). In this case, shear rates can reach several thousand reciprocal seconds. [Pg.39]

Here, the harder partner penetrates the surface of the softer partner resulting in a microcutting process. This problem is particularly pronounced when processing plastics because the fillers and reinforcements that cause wear are added in their pure form, i. e., not coated in melt. The problem applies both for the plastification zone (not in the case of rework materials) as well as for solid fillers. The amount of abrasive wear is primarily determined by ... [Pg.305]
